Well, tank is almost completely clear now after running over night. One complaint I do have is my Sicce return pump is extremely loud I had to take it out in the middle of the night and put the stock return back on. I am pretty disappointed about that, but I might let it run in the display during the day to see it it needs to break in, but it is way too loud during the night and I can't sleep.

I need to pick up some carbon soon but I am going to wait our the cycle, I think I had a lot of die off because I was working with the live rock for at least an hour, and I have to use a sledge hammer to get smaller pieces.

Anyways, I am going to document this tank here for my record keeping. I will be adding things really slow like I did my last tank so this thread will probably die but Ill still post I hope.

This morning, 10hrs after start up.

Welcome back!!!!! What a gorgeous hammer...I see why it was your favorite.

Looking forward to watching your new tank progress :).

Thank you. It was a great wall hammer. I haven't come across one the same color at my lfs. See that pink square frag? That was a beautiful red flowerpot coral. It did great for about a year but got stung by the frogspawn. It never made a recovery :/ Crazy too because the frogspawn was pretty far away.

In this tank I would love to have a gold torch coral, but I am trying to find a spot where the flow would keep the tentacles to one side, away from other corals. I was also thinking of having a green slime on the top, or some type of stylophora.

Well, I was going to keep this a skimmer-less system, but walked by a nice glass jar thing in my basement and it was the perfect size for the second chamber. Asked my mom if she wanted it, she said no. Asked her if I could break it, and she looked at me and said "Yea, do what you want with it." She's the best...

Anyway, here are some pictures after I used our wet table saw. I must have cut a good ten inches off the thing. I hope it works.

Now I just need to buy a pack of wood airstones, and a small air pump. Any recommendations for a small, quiet air pump?

Yes, the color is gorgeous. Very delicate looking.

I like torches too but they have those wild flowing tentacles that always made it difficult for me to place them, even in a big tank! I hope you figure out a good spot for one because they are absolutely dreamy :).

As far as air pumps...I haven't used one in a long time, but when I did I liked the Whisper pumps. Not sure if they even still make them :).

If I can get this skimmer working well, I might have to dive into making this an sps dominate tank..

I keep seeing tanks with just sps, and they look absolutely beautiful, and my lfs has sooo many to choose from. I never had luck with sps in my old tank. I tried a simple pink birdsnest and green monticap and I couldn't keep them alive for very long. They bleached within a month. But with this tank being so small, I am not to scared of the amount of dosing I may have to do.

So, I think I will start with the lps corals and softies and then slowly make it an sps tank. What do you all think?

Great start, and welcome back! I took the same approach with both of my tanks, gradually working up to SPS over time. I'm still working on it :)

Your skimmer is the coolest ever! That bottle is beautiful. I've got an air powered skimmer in my 4g tank and it works well, but the wood air stones don't last long. After about three weeks you can't push enough air through them to keep things skimming well.

I use a Whisper 40 with the both outlets tied together so I can get the most pressure possible to make the air stones last longer. It's quiet but if you discover something that works better I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for stopping by!

Your tank is amazing, your monticap's are unbelievable! The skimmer is coming along. I got some wood from my art store (basswood) that I can cut into like 12 air stones for about five bucks. I am not sure that this skimmer will even work but I am not too worried. I might just stick with the water changes since this is only a ten gallon tank. Or maybe Ill spend the extra bucks for a mame skimmer.

Looking into some "different" looking fish for this tank. I am deff doing some sort of goby, but want one more open water/active swimmer.

What do you guys think about candy stripe hogfish for this tank? Too active for a ten gallon? I want something colorful and active. It is either that or an azure damsel, or cardinal. Maybe a clown, but I want something neat.

Yay, diatoms! Lol.. Good sign that things are moving forward for this fresh tank. Found some life still on the rocks even after I had them out of water for an hour and broke them with a sledge hammer. Its crazy how hardy some of these little creatures are. The second crappy picture is supposed to show a group of red mini feather dusters that are all over the tank.

Yes, the rock pretty much that purple (which is really neat). Still going through a cycle and imagine I will be for maybe one more week.

Ammonia- 0.5ppm

Nitrite- about 2ppm

Nitrate- 5ppm

That's gorgeous purply rock! As far as fish suggestions..I'd go for one of the pygmy type wrasses. They are shy at first but will eventually warm up. Or if you don't want to wait for that to happen you could go with a sixline. As long as it's the last fish added. They can be bullies otherwise.

Well I have decided to get a swalesi basslet for this tank (or some close version of one). I don't know what he is compatible with yet but I might keep just him in here. Maybe Ill add another peaceful fish down the road.

I like the neon dotty backs but I wouldn't be able to get any other fish or even inverts with one of those.

Here is a pic from google incase you guys aren't familiar with swalesi basslets (candy basslet) Note: this is not my picture.

I hope I can find one for a reasonable price. If not I will have to go with a similar type of basslet. I know prices have gone down so I don't mind paying a bit for him.

I hate how indecisive I am..

Would I be crazy to get a Azure Damsel for a couple months then add a neon dotty back? I have never had a dotty back but I know they are meanies..

DIATOMS!!! Time for a small snail crew? It grew more since my last picture.

Well, new set up is doing real well. I have added three snails and a small blue damsel which was only $2, to see how the tank will handle to bio load.

Parameters are all stable and I have actually grown attached to the little guy.. I gave in and named him Charlie. I don't know why damsels are so underrated. He is extremely bright and full of energy all ready. He ate twice and isn't shy when I come close to the tank.

I am not sure if I will get any other fish since my focus is corals, but I may shop around for something that will be good with a damsel. Since he seems so confident already I am going to assume he will show some aggression to a tank mate.

In the meantime, he is doing well and the snails have REALLY cleaned up this rock. They must have been starving because the middle rock is practically clean.

I swear I can see a face in your LR… lol

Candy basslet looks gorgeous! Not familiar with basslets, do they cruise around the tank, or mingle in one spot?

Picked up the first coral for this tank, I hope to get good pictures of it tomorrow. It is a blue yuma with the orange tentacles. It is a nice little coral and I figured it would be a good choice for the first one. When I had my old tank the first coral was a florida ricordea mushroom and it did really well.

Also picked up some nassarius snails to turn my sand bed a bit. I know they don't eat algae, but I just need something moving in there. I love how fast these guys come out of the sand when I put flakes in there, so cool. I never had them in my old tank.
