Potter's Angel- let me know your experiences

So I'd love to have a Pygmy Angel in my new 50gal. - specifically a Potter's Angel. The tank will be SPS dominated with smooth skin acros and a few stylo's and monti's caps from my Nuvo. I know I've seen a few on Nano-reef. Let me know your experience with them and SPS and is it worth the risk.

Really- Argh! Did you have issues with one? I am feeding fool so I was hoping that would keep him happy

The problem is even if you get one that doesnt start picking at your corals right away eventually he will....its just a matter of time. So you just have to be ok with that eventuality if you purchase one.

Thanks Rehype- no that would not be cool if he started nipping. I'll keep looking then.......any experience with a Possum wrasse?

Strike two! Dang, my clowns sit in a corner and rarely ever move and my tailspot darts around for a bit then just chills in a hole or a coral- looking for an open swimmer or at least a little more movement out front- any suggestions?

Pretty much a Potter's but that got shot down quickly- I've had a flame and a bi- color in the past but never with SPS. Now it's morphed into other fish too though

Pink streaked wrasse is awesome!!! I love mine. Regarding potters, I haven't kept one. I did just keep a cherub but literally only for a week. He started picking on stuff right away. So just to clear up any confusion, they are all hit or miss when it comes to whether they will pick at stuff. If u have a very established tank with plenty of grazin opportunities I think the likelihood of things being picked on is less.

Also, they don't actually eat the coral of the polyps, but rather enjoy the mucous that some corals release. This is what they are nipping at, the mucous itself. They are more primarily gonna go after lps, in my tank was all over the fungias, Favias, leptastrea, and cyphastrea. So the constant picking of the mucous causes the coral to retract and eventually if it remains retracted for too long it will die. Definitely not overnight though. Also in our smaller tanks, if you chose to try, getting them out is not that hard if it turns out it doesn't work and yours is a nipper.

Don't touch your rocks cause u will never get them back how u want, and we all know how much fun it is trying to get a fish out. Easiest way and the way I do it when I need to get a fish out is to literally drain the whole tank. Fish will congregate naturally in the deepest area or in my case I literally took it down to sand. Once they are flopping, pick him up and immediately put ur water bCk. Easy peasy in less than fifteen minutes and the other fish should all be fine for the 60 seconds u may have them flopping for. Good luck!!!! Oh yea, also ur corals will be fine out of water if u ever use this method.

Get a pair of Fairy or flasher wrasse and a perhaps some anthias such as resplendent or randalls. Beautiful fish and plenty of movement.

What about a Pink Streaked wrasse? OR a school of chromis?

Interesting, just read about them (pink streaked) might be a great choice. Not sure I want a wrasse quite yet to deplete the copepod population. Great option though - thx

Great information smeagol. Interesting about eating the Mucous that the coral produces- since sps will be my focus I couldn't stand seeing it bothering or nipping

I'll have to get familiar with those. I've had 6-lines in the past but never kept any kind of anthias- I'll ck em out thanks

No problem.. you have alot of options in those categories so just do some digging and see which ones interest you.

School of chromis- that sounds interesting hmmm

I'm planning on 5 blue/green ones in my new tank! some day! When it has water ;)

I love schooling fish and they swim out in the open. My clowns will occasionally swim out in the open, but mostly sit in their toadstool all day. And my gobies live in their rock cave :)

Decent write up on the pygmys:

And to note on the pink streaked wrasse. Like anything hit or miss on whether they destro pods, my first one (rip - sucked him into filter one dAy doing maintenance) destroyed them. The one I have had since July now doesn't care for them as much. Wants all that meaty food I put in the tank.

Excellent, thanks for the link- that will be a good read tonight

Even if you have an angel that does not do damage, they still randomly nip at everything because that is their behavior. You will end up with poor polyp extension. So you need to decide what is more important to you.

Thanks Tamberav- ya the SPS are my focus for this tank so no nipping will be tolerated.
