5 gallon fluval spec v reef ideas?

Hello everyone! I'm new to nano-reef and I have just recently set up a 5 gallon fluval spec v micro reef. So far everything is great. Water is Crystal clear and parameters are perfect. The only thing I changed is the lighting. I'm currently running a 18"-24" current USA orbit marine led light with a ramp pro timer and controller (witch fits perfect on the tank by the way). So far I am very impressed with the light. I have a pretty big zoa colony, some polyps and a nice toadstoal. At least I think it's a toadstoal. Still don't know the names of certain corals. They seem to love the lighting. Open up every morning and look amazing under it. I have around 7 pounds of premium live rock and about a 2inch deep sand bad of arag alive indo Pacific sand. So my question being I don't know what to do to make this a better tank. I would like some opinions. I was thinking about removing the massive filter sponge they have in the back chamber and putting some kind of protein skimmer in or just buying the after market filter basket and putting in some chemi pure elite and purigen. Idk if being such a small tank (that I don't plan to overstock) I would need a protein skimmer plus I have all that live rock and sand. The water flow on the tank now is minimal with there pump putting out only 85gph. Any suggestions on updating that? I plan on ordering a koralia nano 240gph tonight. Let me know what you guys think. I really love this tank and only want to do what's best for it. Thanks

Firstly nice to know another person setting up a Fluval Spec V. I would love to see some pictures.

For my tank I swapped out the return pump to a Marineland 606 pump for more flow. They don't produce them anymore and can be a bit difficulty to find. I also pulled out the sponge filter from the back area and made a DIY holder with light diffuser egg crate that I got from Home Depot. cheap and can be zip tied together. I use ceramic media to increase my bio filtration surface area and a piece of foam to catch the larger detritus. I've used the chemipure elite as well in my other picos and that worked until I got too lazy to change them out.

Evaporation was an issue with me so I had to keep doing manual top offs every day or two. I later added a glass top to cover the display area and help decrease evaporation but eventually took it off due to salt creep and laziness. lol. Do you see a trend here?

I just reset my tank last night and am going to try doing one with a macro theme. Good luck.

I have the Hydor Pico 200 in my 6.25. It's small so hopefully it'll fit into your compartment. It's also damn quiet. I put it together with my heater it was knocking on my heater until I cut some airline tubing in half and tied around the pump.

Thanks for the replys. I would post pics if it would let me? I just recently put an aquatop 265gph nano circulation pump I got at my lfs for only 15 bucks just to see how the flow works with the tank before I get my koralia and it actually works great and the corals seem to love the flow. Also I added a cleaner shrimp and some blue hermits.

the easiest way, i have found, to post pictures is to get a photobucket account and post photos there.

from photobucket, click on the picture you want to upload and click on the "get link codes" icon.

copy the "direct link" url and then in you reply box here click on the icon that says "image" and paste the url in that box.

I'm sure there is a forum tutorial thread floating around somewhere here, might look in the beginner forum area?

Hope that helps, and welcome to NR :welcome:

Another question I have my ramp controller running my lights at 100 percent for a 12 hour cycle and 4 hour moonlighting. My corals seem fine but will they do better in a different light cycle or percentage?

Just made a DIY egg crate media basket and will make a build thread soon. I'm running filter floss in top, carbon in middle and ceramic rings in bottom

Check out my build below. I have had mine running almost 2 years now with lots of trial and error. Don't worry about skimmers. Weekly water change will take care of that. Also I got to the point I'm not running any filter floss or sponge. All I have is live rock and sand with a DIY media holder with chemi pure elite and cheato and that's it. Feel free to ask me any questions.

That's awesome are your rocks touching the back glass because the problem I have now is cleaning the back glass

yes they touch but i have decided to let the back glass purple up. not a bad look

i bought the MJ606 a while ago to replace the pump and the nano 240 in the other corner. I guess after the tank matures there is less junk floating around.
