hardest thing i ever had to do

So yesterday was the hardest day of my 39 years of life, i had to put my best friend of 14 years to sleep.

Hooky, my 14 year old boston terrier, was the coolest, funniest, friendliest, and most loving dog ever. He slept with me every night, and ate with me...i took him everywhere....Something burst inside of him, and he couldnt breathe, or walk....he could barely stand....there was nothing they could do for him....i was a friggin mess, i cried like a baby all day. I couldnt sleep at all, i was up until 830 this morning. Every time i closed my eyes, i saw him on the table with the I.V. in his arm. It sucked so bad that i will never get another dog again.

I really hoped you didn't have to go through this, I remember you mentioning it on your other thread.. I just put my golden down, Duke, a couple of days ago and I have been crying everyday (as a matter a fact I was just crying two mins ago).

I have to agree with you.. this experience is the worst I have ever gone through, even more so than some of the people I have lost in my life. Its hard to lose a pet that you see everyday, and who shows unconditional love.

14yrs is a long life, and I am sure it was filled with love and happiness for him. Try to think of all the good. If you have someone to talk to, it really helps.

Sorry to hear that, and I feel your pain. We had to put down our 6 year old Australian Shepherd two years ago (cancer) and it absolutely broke our hearts, more so for the fact that our daughter (8 months old at the time) wouldn't get to experience what an awesome dog he was (man, I'm tearing up over here).

Don't give up on having another dog. While letting go can be so hard, the years of joy and love that you have with a dog (or any other pet for that matter) can't be beat.

Chin up.

Sorry for your loss, it is so hard to lose them, especially when they have been with you a long time. Hooky sounds like he was a awesome little dog, don't say never on another. Saying goodbye is the worst but the love and companionship and happiness they bring daily is worth it.

So sorry to hear man. 14 years or any time for that matter is a long time and they are part of the family.

I know exactly what picture is in your mind. I had a hard time letting that image go when we had to put my lab down. I tried to remember the good times. The best thing (just like reef keeping) is time.

RIP Hooky

I am so sorry. It is the hardest thing we as pet owners do and the kindest thing we do for them at the end.

He had the best life a dog can hope for with you - all they ask for is our live, and you gave him that in spades. What a handsome face - he will be at Rainbow Bridge waiting for you.

Really am sorry for your loss. We had to put our dog down when I was in high school and it was terrible. We now have a cat and I cant even begin to think about how hard it's going to be when that day comes.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a loving pet is incredibly hard. I've had to put down a few due to old age or sickness. Just yesterday my 16 year old cat had an issue, I went into full on panic attack, couldn't taste my food, heart palpitations... i just love him so much, I can't bear to think of a time when he won't be with me. He has kidney disease so he isn't 100%. But i pray that when it's his time, he does not suffer.

I hope you decide to give another little puppy your love and a home.

I am sorry to hear that. I known it is tough. We had a Tibetan lassa whom we got for my sister when it was 13 days old. I remember feeding it with the bottle. Unfortunately she was poised a house maid and it died in my mothers lap puking.

We have never kept a dog after that .. It is just too hard!!

my condolences, when my childhood dog had to be put down, i was a mess. i couldnt look at another dog without crying. after a while i was able to control it, but the pain never went away. since then i have another dog, she is great, but i still hold on to my childhood dog. its hard but being able to feel pain means you truly cared.

My lab/retriever cross of almost 15 years passed on Sunday. I feel your pain my friend, its a rough time and like you, I also cried like a baby. We were prepared for it as she was getting really old but it didn't make it any easier. My thoughts go out to you.

Sorry for loss. I feel your pain , we had two dogs that grew up together , one was 14 yrs old and she was really sick so we had to put her down with in a few weeks the second one passed from a broken heart ( that's what I think) took me a very long time to get over it , I had eventually got another dog.

Rip hooky

I am so sorry. My last dog was a victim of a car and the damage to his body was too bad, there was nothing the dr could do and we had to put him down. It was gut wrenching but I knew he was out of pain and off to a better place. I'm so sorry.
