40b peninsula returns

hey all. feel like ive been all over the forum trying to get getting input about how best to go about this 40breeder peninsula. I am curious as to how to best get good flow in this setup, I am debating between either A.) overflow in one corner, return in the other or B.) overflow in the middle and a return on each side. I am trying t avoid having to buy 2 mp10s, and feel like that will be the case if i go the 1 return route. I am keeping mostly lps/zoas/shrooms but a few sps down the top. Anyone with experience with setting up a 40b like this? Plan on ordering the glass-holes stuff today, picked up a 40 breeder few days ago (petco 1$/g sale going on till early november)

IMO you are going to need 2 mp10's to get good flow. I am getting my stuff together for a 40 breeder also and I plan on having a mp10 on each end of it. Don't know how it would affect things though if you have all the flow coming from the overflow end. Would it not push everything(leftover food, fish poop, etc) to the other end of the tank when I should be going to the overflow? Have you thought about a gyre for it?

For the return you could always do a big overflow across the width and take your return over the top? I'd want as much surface skimming as possible since it's such a small area.

Take that for what it's worth as I have no experience with peninsula tanks.

I look at returns as surface agitators, not flow. Realistically, unless your return pump is cranking flow faster than most sumps/overflows are designed to handle they aren't going to accomplish much else.

Upside, since you aren't going SPS heavy 1 mp 10 may be sufficient depending on your aquascape. I would still go with a center overflow and dual returns, mostly because I find that arrangement more aesthetically pleasing.

What are the dimensions of your standard 40b? I'm in the UK and we don't do this hole 20 30 40 b thing.

I'm running a 3x2x2 peninsula. It was a cheap second hand tank with a left had weir already in it so I have lost some viewing side due to having to hide the weir, but overall the peninsula effect is good.

I run my return to the opposite end of the tank to my weir, but as others have said, it is not enough flow to move corals and ensure crud doesn't collect in the tank.

I have just swapped 2 jebao RW-4s and a no brand 5000lph wavemaker out for a single jebao RW-15 and what a difference that has made. Running the RW-15 at half power is still moving more water than all 3 pumps before. Think it must be the size of the unit that's making the difference. If your going jebao, look at the RW's not the older WP's. The RW's seem to move more water and have a wider flow as opposed to a focused jet.

thanks for your feedback benny. 40 breeder is 36"Lx18"Wx16"H. i was looking at those trying to figure out the difference between rw and wp, sounds like a couple rw is what I want.

Yeah those dimensions a single RW-8 will probably be the ticket. I have my RW-15 on the back wall up high and slightly over towards the weir pointing slightly toward the opposite corner as my rock work has a gap in it I wanted to push water through. It's basically giving the same affect a gyre pump would. On ELSE mode I get great movement, it's mostly one way, but as the pump slows and speeds up it does make things sway both ways nicely. The RW-4s were set up next to each other for a while and did push a nice gyre type affect, but just didn't move the water like this single much larger RW-15 does.

The write ups I've read suggest the RW's create more draw from around them than the WP's and similar pumps do, and my 15 is mounted some 19 inches off the sand bed and even at half power is lifting fine sand and crap from the sand bed below it as it spins up to full speed so it doesn't just push water well, it creates good flow around it too.
