Hi!

Hubby got me HOOKED on this new hobby. We have a 250g tank at home for almost a year and in the past 5 months I have realized I have a new passion. I love coming home, grabbing a glass of wine and sitting infront of it with my huuby and just RELAX!! Now its a hobby we both share!

Last week he surprised me w a new nano-reef tank for my office. IM IN LOVE and am so looking forward to starting from scratch and building anew world in it!! Its in its first stages (1 week old). Ive been reading so much because I am a total rookie to the "saltwater life" and I want "my baby" to be beautiful and alive.

My husband hired a tank guy that was the one that set it up and is supposed to go monthly to check on everything BUT I want to learn how to do things myself. ESPECIALLY after reading that these tanks are very delicate. Within 24 hours the whole tank can crash.

Soooo, any suggestions and tips will be greatly appreciated. Here is a pic of my new baybeh!!!

:welcome: To NR.com!!!

You've come to the right place. With our help, you'll be firing that tank maintenance guy in no time. Looks like you're of to a good start. These little tanks can be quite stable as long as you keep an eye on some basic needs.

Lemme first point you over to the IM 10g club... Yep we have an entire club for these tanks. Check out some of the modifications they've done and see what they've been able to pull off with the awesome lil tanks.

  • 2 weeks later...

My temperature is between 73.6 - 75F. I have just put one fish. A Royal Gramma and seems fine but with the temperature, I am scared to put in any corals. The water levels are great! Put in the fish (Felicia) to start cycling the tank. Is the temperature too low to start putting in some corals and/or Zoas?

We generally do not like to run the cycle with fish in the tank. You can get the same effect by just throwing some fish food in there and letting it decompose to feed the bacteria. Kinda stressful for the fish :( hopefully he does ok.

The temp is definitely too low for coral. I'd ramp up the heater until it's closer to 78 deg.

Go figure!! Fish is actually doing ok!! I am going to try to start w some zoanthids. LFS told me to cylce w fish first and then throw in some corals. But since fish is doing so well I am going to give it another week and throw in some coral.

LFS TOLD ME THAT CORAL DO BETTER IN COLDER WATERS. HMMM,!!! Confused now. Should I buy anheater or not!

Thank youuuuu!!!

What is "ATO"?

Definitely need ATO for an office tank. Nice setup for office

Do buy a heater, specially with winter coming up. Coral does best in 78-80 deg. Let the tank set for at least 2 weeks then test to be sure it's safe. Or take your water sample to the store and have them check it. No sense in wasting money to watch coral die ;)

ATO= Auto Top Off, maintains the proper water level during the weekends... helpful but not a must is you keep easy coral
