Flow too strong for Royal Gramma?

The Dish

Recommended Posts

I have a Royal Gramma in a Biocube 14 that was introduced 2 weeks ago. He is the only fish in the tank (along with the CUC). As I expected he has stayed pretty tight to the live rock and I rarely saw him except for darting out to grab food. He has a little cave he has claimed and sits very tight to it usually only his head stick out. I figured this was just his personality, but then I started to notice overtime I turn my plumbing and powerhead off to change the water he comes out a swims around and is quite active (I usually have everything off for 20 minutes or so)

For my flow I have a Hydor Nano Koralia 240, and I'm starting to wonder if maybe based on the positioning or something that he's simply just hiding from the current.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You could move the powerhead and see if that helps. Could really go either way tho. Most Basslets I've owned were pretty reclusive as well. Maybe not "hide in a cave reclusive" but more like "cruise the back of the tank playing peek-a-boo" reclusive. I don't know if that helps at all lol.

My royal gramma does nothing but hide he's the only fish in a 20g and he and my mantis are friends so he's just a cave dwellar. I walk by and it hides. I've had him 1.5 yrs now. Ridiculous. Doubt it's about flow.

The only reason I thought it might be the flow is any time the pump is off he's out crusing around and not startled by anything. Sort of thought it was peculiar for a fish that normally plays the "peek-a-boo" chilling in the rocks all day

I would point the power head toward the glass more. It will still circulate fine. Do you turn off the pumps when you feed him? I turn off all flow when I feed my two grammas. They know when the pumps go off it's feeding time and cruise out from near their caves.

No I leave the pump on when I feed him - I found if it's off the food doesn't make its rounds around the tank and sometimes he doesn't notice. Right now the pump is pointed up towards the surface of the water. I'll move it around a bit. It's also on the same side as the return - not sure if I should move it to the opposite side.

I'm wondering if turning the power head off used to be a feeding que for him from the LFS. I've been playing around with the tank for the past couple of hours and the minute I turn the pumps off he's out in the open swimming around - swimming vertically (which is kinda funny to watch) darting around and a joy to watch. But the second those pumps kick in he's right back into his lair.

Sounds like a personality (dis)order. Nuthin to worry about... just his style

I agree. I've had a few different royal grammas and they all have different personalities. Much more distinct from one another than other fish. =]

Yep - I figured that's probably the biggest thing. I guess if I want to see him I'll just switch the power head off lol
