Haha, your cats seem to enjoy your hobbies almost as much as you do.

As for the skimmer. Mine was really loud when I first got it, but has since quieted down alot. I almost don't hear it unless I'm standing next to the tank.

Yep, once the skimmer breaks in you set the bubble level pretty low to get good skimmate, and it's not loud at that level. The procedure from IM is to close the knob until there are no bubbles being produced, then open it 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn. Then adjust the level of the cup to get a wetter or drier skimmate.

Looks great! I love that picture of the cats. :)

Yeay, those cats look like they'd enjoy a fish or 2 in there. ;)

Im actually very scared about the fish and cats... they are my trouble making twins....

nanobox looks SO GOOD. Can't wait till you start getting stuff in there. Cat on the right is totally geekin' out too. He / she is going to be a problem.. calling it now

Tank is looking really good! That nanobox fits the fusion 10 just perfect!

About the cats... Same problem here... The white, red one is just 9 months old and he even gets the lid open...

So as i was lowering the sandbed i might have knocked some rocks over.... I had to do some repairs and i like the way it turned out. So ignore the cloudy water.

Also today was snail day John sent over a nice package that i was afraid would be snail cicles. floated and released hopefully they all come back to life. Some of the little guys are starting to crawl up side but the big guys are still dormant.

The larger Snails are notorious for staying dormant for a few days. Mine were the exact same way, dont worry about them. Tank looks like it's coming along well, nice job!

Lol, those big round snails are pretty much worthless in my tank too. They primarily live off of the algae that will build up on the glass and back wall.

Yeah, the nerites love to go exploring. If you leave the top off they will go or a walk and get lost. If you find one all dried up on the floor or on the table, just throw it back in. As long as you find it within a day or two it will be just fine. But like Droy said, they tend to be a bit lazy. Although mine seem to have decided to actually work for a living...I think they need a couple weeks to learn where the food is :)

So i talked to John from Reef cleaners and he advised me to remove all the dead snails which i did yesterday.

The ammonia in the tank had been recently climbing and its getting pretty high now i think were really close to .50ppm. Anyway i look at the tank today and where all my nasty brown has been there is now an explosion of nasty brown bubble algae would be my guess. What do i do to get this under control or do i just have to wait and let the bacteria grow and order more snails from John.?

Your ammonia is going up because of the dead snails, it causes a mini cycle. What you're getting now is very typical for a new tank, you're going through the ugly tank syndrome.

Do regular turkey basting of the rocks and sand to blow off anything that will come loose, do regular water changes, and wait it out. I had the exact same brown bubble stuff in my tank and it went away on its own after a couple weeks.

What do you consider regular water changes? once a week? twice? every day? is this a bubble algae? its soo ugly

Link to comment

If you have ammonia and want to minimize the risk to the snails I'd do daily changes until it goes back down, then once a week. The brown bubbly stuff is not bubble algae, it's just a common algae you will see while the tank gets balanced out.

Btw,it's most likely that brown stuff is calotrix, which will clear up as the tank matures. It is often confused with dinos which are much harder to get rid of.

Link to comment

Honestly, the easiest way to tell is that the dinos will almost certainly never go away. But yours looks exactly like what I had which was not dinos.

John from reefcleaners has a nice guide to nuisance algae on his site. You can see a picture of both there. Note in particular his advice for how to handle dinos
