Wretched 66 SCA

Wretched

Recommended Posts

Hello folks, we may know each other from NR or we may not. I have a build thread on my 45 gallon JBJ all-in-one tank that has been up for 2 years now, prior to that tank they were in a 34 gallon RSM and prior to that a Biocube 16. This past labor day, SC Aquariums was having a sale on their tanks and I pulled the trigger for their Plug-n-play 66 gallon w/ a 29 gallon sump. This is my first time venturing into a sumped tank. Due to my past military experience I had to have tanks that were able to be mobile. My corals are very healthy and growing, fast... The 45 JBJ is no longer acceptable due to shadowing and absolutely no room for expansion. So here we are in our current position!

If you're interested in seeing my journey on the JBJ 45-RL Check this link:

Within the next few weeks I plan to get her wet, add the sand and mix the salt. Let the skimmer run a bit and make sure the system is functioning how it should be.

Did a water change on the JBJ (established tank) and used 10g of dirty water poured into my sump to test my skimmer and the fact I have to use a lot of the water from previous tank during switch...

That tank is pretty darn beautiful!

What generation Radion is that? You like it?

Think the two RW-4s will be enough?

What return pump? Ive heard good thinks about the Jebao DCT series.

Thank you.

I have no idea honestly, it's the one from Zia. I dont know how to tell the difference...

I have one rw4, bought an RW-8 and its currently in the tank... very powerful. Also have the mp10 that I benched from the JBJ.

Im using the stock return pump for now. I have things I still need to buy to get this lady running. If I do, i'll be looking at those jebao DC pumps.

Do you see that mad skimmer action?!

Looking for orange/yellow/purple/red

I love the look of Lyretail anthias but i'm sure I can't house one...

Any thoughts? Thank you

I like the dimensions of this tank a lot!

I have a question, how high does the sump water level need to be?

I just recently started my first tank with a sump and had to figure out the answer to this question too. You need to have enough water to cover your return pump, but you need to leave enough room to support the back-siphoning from the DT if the power to your return pump is cut.

All the water in the overflow down to the lowest drain will flow back, and water will siphon back through the return. So, (L x W of overflow x depth of drain) + (L x W x depth of return). Check out this article for more info: http://gmacreef.com/reef-aquarium-sump-tank-design/

Thanks for the link, will give it a go. I have turned it off and on a few times to see min/max and I think I am good. Thank you sir.

Looks epic bro. Glad to see it coming along nicely.

Also...I think zias light was a first generation ;)

Yes sir, loving it. Minus the Afghanistan sand storm going on. Hopefully it'll clear up in a few days. All I know is this radion is beautiful.

Radions are incredible!

Theoretically you could upgrade it to the newest "Puck", but the difference is pretty nominal. Not worth the $$ when the 1st generation is so awesome!

Only thing is you might need wide angle lenses for a tank this size.

You could contact SC about the gurgle.

If we're talking Belfour/Modano/Hull era, I can give you some kuddos.... Once a Duck, always a Duck here!

Speaking with some buddies now, they say to put a ball valve on the return pump to control flow. Too fast of flow going up than coming down. Overflow can't keep it. Not 100 though

Update Monday, September 21

Still need to add more sand, the second batch of sand I bought was returned before it even shipped to me due to damage so I ordered more last night. 40lbs.

Tank is cloudy as hell still so I added an AC 70 to help with it.

I drilled a 1/4 hole into the durse pipe and added some airline tubing to stop the gurgle and now the tank is completely silent minus the soothing trickle from the overflow.

I added a ball valve to control the speed of the return pump as well and everything is looking great.

Nice build! Good luck this season,

You guys need it. (rangers fan) but living in Cali I go for the ducks anyday over the Kings.

I know it's kinda early to tell but how's the quality of that skimmer? Might be a overkill on my 20 gal.

So much hate for the Ducks, sportsnet, NBC, yahoo sports, the NHL... Now nano-reef! Haha, all good... I love it, such a skilled team that chokes (unfortunate). Thanks for Hagelin, he'll definitely be an asset. One team I don't respect, the Kings. Though, Doughty/Kopitar are respectable players. I can't get past Quicks cry baby attitude though.

I'm hoping by the end of the weekend all my livestock will be transferred over. Still dealing with the duststorm from adding sand AFTER water :P

The skimmer is already pulling out foam/gunk from the love sand. From reviews it's a quality cheap skimmer. Knock off Reef Octopus.

As for being over kill for a 20g, yes indeed. Check out Cadlights PLS-50 elite. I have it on the JBJ 45, it works excellent when you have it dialed in... but man the frustration of getting it dialed in... very high.

Looks like a great build. Changing out the floss or at least rinsing it daily will help get that cloudy water under control. Do you have a filter sock that the water is coming down into?

So far, just using the floss, rinsing and changing. I had put an order in with cadlights for my sock holder and some socks. They still haven't shipped yet :(

Got another 20lbs of sand in there for a total of 60 lbs. I am done adding the sand, just need to level it out. My goal is to have all coral transferred over by this weekend!! Woohoo!

Haha I love it. Sid is a whiney bitch, just like Quick... but the similarities? Two of the best players in the world. Kessel winging Sid... Jesus. Powerhouse.

I have a lyretail in my tank. You would be fine with just 1 in there IMO. I know some people might object and say you need a bigger tank. Mine is doing great so far. Hangs out with the clowns, has plenty of rock to hide in and sleep at night, eats like a pig. The other night I saw him sleeping inside a hole in one of the rocks with just a small part of it's tail hanging out. That fish is a lot of fun to watch and hasn't had any issues with anything in the tank.
