As promised in another thread I'm creating a thread of my deployment and posting some pics of the places I've gone too and things I've seen, please keep in mind pics will be limited due to the horrific slow internet on the ship and most of my pics are on my phone and will be uploaded upon return to home port in just a couple of months but I'll try to add new pics every few days!

As stated above I'm currently deployed on the USS FORREST SHERMAN DDG98 with the Theodore Roosevelt strike group, you may have seen us on the news over the past couple of months, maybe not. I am a CTR2 which is a Cryptologist 2nd class petty officer/E-5 so I get to do all the fun things in the Intelligence world and I love my job

DIVE DIVE DIVE 25-30 foot seas from my boat, I hauled ass up to the bridge to get this shot when I heard how it looked.

Me overlooking Florance Italy which was so beautiful and such an amazing port call, the food in Italy is by far some of the best food I've ever had no matter where you went.

All of us pier side in Jordan enjoying some beer on the pier one night in port, myself with our Division, was a boring port because we couldn't go anywhere and lord it was hot, over 100 degrees there. But it was nowhere near what Bahrain was, 130+ everyday

Sadly that is all I have for right now because the internet is ungodly slow this evening, more to come later tonight or tomorrow, I hope you guys enjoy!

Anchors away! My longest deployment was 3 days on San Clemente Island here in San Diego (unless you count A-School in Millington). Shore duty sucked!

Thanks for all you do brother!

San Diego was my 1st duty station on board the USS STERETT DDG104, and 3 days is no deployment that is a super brief underway. Deployment would be anything over 6 months, 4 months would be a patrol. Come talk to me when you've done 60+ days underway newbie :P

Saddest day, the day we left for deployment, all the family and loved ones that were able to come say goodbye.

About a month after being deployed that 1st mail day arrived and it was so glorious to get mail in, this is about 20% of what we got that day, we got over 2,000lbs of mail in haha

And those who didn't see the other thread, really rough seas pic taken from the flight deck

I have to ask. Is it at all like The Last Ship (TV series?)? Besides the whole apocalypse stuff, that is.

Have you or any carriers you've served on been in active combat?

How do they drop mail on ship? Helicopter right?

I believe they get it at port

we get mail when we pull into port, while we UNREP (Underway Replenishment) we pull along side an oilier and they can Helo it on or we hook up tension cables and they send it over that way as well.

I have never seen that TV show "The Last Ship" before. I have never served on a carrier before, I've always done DDG's Guided Missile Destroyers, baddest ships in the Navy!

This is a Underway Replenishment (UNREP) you we take on fuel on 1 tension line aft and the forward line is our cargo, parts, supplies, mail that comes over. Hard to see the cables coming across but this was a truly beautiful clear night.

This is really a cool thread. It's like the secret life of a soldier lol.

Watch yourself, those are fighting words... unless you're army... then its just you... lol

My father was a submariner (son of an AF colonel, decided to be rebellious. One of my frieds just did the same thing and just had her winging ceremony for the Navy).

Drove my mother up the wall because he would come on and be like "I am leaving tomorrow morning." And that was that. He couldn't give us anymore notice. No surprise, they got a divorce. My mother can't stand secrets, even the "for our country's safety" kind lol but my dad loved secrets, including the "dont tell my wife" kind. XD <-- I knoe, strange sense of humor, but when life gives you lemons...-- he works as a chemical engineer now on boats delivering supplies and gear to oil rigs. He is usually in Africa or South America. The sea is a constant calling. Due to the recent issues in the industry though, he is working in Alaska. And he isn't happy about it considering the weathe rhe is used to. Lol

As promised a couple more each day. We had a UNREP today and it was a perfect morning/afternoon outside and that is me in the yellow float coat.

This was taken awhile back when we did a Suez channel transit, yes land is that close on each side, closer on some parts. Wish I had the Panama channel pics, that was a cool transit as well.

OH and being a reef forum this is our RO unit she puts all of ours to shame, turns sea water into fresh drinking water at the rate of 250 Gallons per hour between the 2 of them!

And we don't get to do these often but you gotta take some down time and enjoy a Steel Beach Picnic and grill out once in awhile!

Thats awesome.

One comment/question though: I thought RO and desalination were totally different things?

edit: And that yellow "Float coat" also functions as a life jacket? Thats sweet

Nope, that RO unit turns salt water into fresh water. Don't ask me how that monster works because I haven't got a clue haha. That would be something our engineers could answer though, I'll have to ask a buddy sometime later today....ugh it's 0500 here and only 2200 EST or 10:00pm for you land lubbers :)

I was a helo electrician when I was in, AE. Was that an American bird? Looks like the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King I used to work on, but slightly off. The pontoons don't look right, looks like it only has 4 main rotors and I'm pretty sure ours had 5. Couple other little things look off. Any idea what it is?

haha yeah I don't have a clue on what type of helo that is, it belonged to a USNS and we were doing a pax transfer along with a couple vertreps for stuff that day. We keep the SH60's onboard our ship.

That is a desalinization unit. Harrold was correct. Desalinization makes saltwater into fresh water. RO purifies.

Looks like it's an SA330J Puma. I had to Google the call numbers. I think they are owned by civilian contractors from what I could gather. Not the bird I worked on.

Not exactly your average cruise ship

So I'll add one more for today, our wonderful living quarters. I'm being 100% sarcastic of course, the mattresses are horrible and thin which makes it kinda like laying on a rock and the standard issue pillow is just awful and falls apart and gets flat as a pancake in no time flat.

Thankfully I bought myself a 3 inch memory foam pad and about a month ago I got my gel infused memory foam pillow so I'm sleeping in comfort! I'll try to post a pic of my rack eventually, it's a sweet top rack. Top racks are the best since you get actual head room!

It's been over 8 years since making the decision to join such a force used to serve the United States of America. That's 8 anniversaries of remembering what tragic event happened only 14 years ago today... I could never have imagined becoming a part of something that had such an impact on that day in history. And with that I'm proud to be able to wake up every morning, put on the USN uniform, and do my part to help keep such a day from ever reoccurring.
