Langer6's 2.5 Gallon Desktop Pico

I cant wait to see it setup. You have me toying with ideas of building a hood for my pico.

Dont forget that hot air rises. I think if you can make an opening at the top you will setup a little convection current and draw in cool air through the bottom as the hot air rises out the top.

Maybe this is a crazy idea, but what if you made a little chimney that doubled as a feeding hole?

Holes in the top would definitely be the most effective I just need to figure out how to do it without looking like butt. Maybe I could spray paint some of these...

The chimney would be hilarious. You figure out how to do it and let me know... :P

I second the idea on putting a vent in the top. Wouldn't water eventually rust your equipment since the water doesn't really have anywhere to go? Unless I'm missing a vent that's been mentioned here.

There is about 1/8" between the rim of the tank and the canopy so it's not completely sealed but it does need some more flow. Think the spray painted vent idea above would work and still look okay?

Yo....this build is killer...DIY at it's finest !

Thanks!!! :D

It would, but depends on placement, cause your lights will also be near this vent. The lights will try to diffuse light out through there as well.

Well the entire setup finally made its way to my office. I felt like I was on a mini episode of Shipping Wars with it all packed up in my car. I spoke to my fish guy and he comes on campus a week from Wednesday so I'll have to put up with annoying coworkers asking me why I have a tank full of rocks for the next 10 days or so. Oh well they will be more impressed in a few months!

Drilled holes in the back and top to help air flow. Doesn't look to bad...

First official FTS I suppose. I'll get a clearer one later.

I've had the lights on for about 6 hours and the temp is right at 84. I'm not going to turn them on at all Monday and see how low it gets. Need to get the temp figured out before adding anything.

Cleared up FTS...

Got my first coral today! A tiny little cheap golden eye zoa frag that has about 20 polyps on it and is well encrusted. I like the frag plug as well because it's a little more natural and not so hockey puckish. Everything was open in a few hours. May not look like much but hey, first coral right? Also threw some chaeto in the fuge.

Nice start! The zoas look happy. Whats next?

Thanks! I've got some green and purple hairy mushrooms coming next week.

Cool frag plug and nice zoa's.

Thanks Anden.

I love the frag plug! it will look really cool covered in zoas

Thanks I think so too!

is it a reefgen?

I'm not sure but it does look like it doesn't it? I'll ask the LFS guy. He said something about it being made for the Georgia Aquarium but that could be BS.

Update time. I got some red legged hermits and a rock of purple and green hairy mushrooms. Upon arrival the mushrooms were in pretty bad shape. One was bleached, one was detached and melting, and another was breaking up. I broke the rock up to salvage the good pieces and dipped them all as I normally would. Of course I tossed any dead tissue. I'm keeping a close eye on things and will do a big water change tomorrow morning in case anything dies off overnight. Other than that, tank is looking good.

These two are in decent shape

I removed the melted ones. They were clearly gonners. Even the hermit crab knew what was up.

I like those mushrooms.

That one does look kinda like a Yuma, but I think its just a mushroom like the others, that was shadded and needs to color up.

Picked up a couple new frags this morning. I hope I don't regret it but I got them from Petco . I've been checking out their saltwater selection for a couple months now and their one and only frag tank always seemed to be doing okay. They were $15 each so I figured it was worth a shot. Fingers crossed they don't die or infest my young tank. Any idea what these two are? Some type of zoa and star polyp but exact ID would be great. Thanks y'all.
