Gyre vs MP-40

Well my mom is asking what I want for my birthday this month, so I'm trying to decide on what would be a better fit for my tank to replace my shitty Jebao WP-10's.

I see a lot of people recently trying to trade or sell their Gyres for the trusty ole' MP40. I love the idea of a Gyre but I need something that is really going to pump out some flow and reduce dead spots.

I have a Innovative Marine Fusion 30L so my tank is 36 x 15 x 12, so I don't know if the MP40 would be too much.

Any of you Gyre users have any experience or words of wisdom with these pumps?

Thanks!

I don't think either will work for that tank since it is such a shallow tank. The gyre is going to push a bunch of sand around and so will the MP 40. You'll end up with way too much flow on one side of the tank and then just enough on the other side. You're much better off getting a pair of RW-4s or MP10s.

One MP40 would be too much, you'd have to turn it up too high to get it to push the 36" properly. The Gyre would do a bit better, but you probably wouldn't be able to have any sand, it would push it away from the opposite end. I think you'd be better served by one MP10 on either side.

I had the Gyre 130 in my fusion 30L. I ran it at 50% without sand issue with Fiji Pink sand. The issue I did have however, is getting the full effect of the gyre in small tank like ours. The gyre -just- fits in the display, and it's so close to either output nozzle, that the output directly corrupts the Gyre's flow. This effectively makes the 'gyre' non existent because it's flow runs smack into a perpendicular flow of the out put. The only way I was able to correct this was to run 90 degree PVC elbows over my output nozzles, directing the flow away from my Gyre (with the flow of the gyre). While this did indeed work, allowing the Gyre to do its job, it also limited my 'random flow' IMO, and wouldn't allow me to place another pump opposite the gyre. I subsequently purchased an MP10 with the plan of getting a second later on down the road.

The Jaebo RW pumps are much improved over the WP pumps. I have two RW pumps as supplemental to my MP40's in the 150 plus a little RW4 in my 29. Good pumps!

My damn RW-4 just crapped out on me after about 9 months of use:/ Not sure what's wrong with it but I've taken it apart and cleaned the impeller and the impeller housing. I think I'm going to go to the dark side and try out a used MP10 which pains me a bit because the RW-4 had been such a great pump for the price. Regardless, I think most people are in agreement that you're much better off with two smaller powerheads on each side of the tank (either MP10s or RW-4s). That way you get the right amount of flow across the entire tank as opposed to very high flow on one side and ok flow on the opposite side.

^agreed

A RW4 on either side would be great

Thankfully I have a bare bottom tank, well.. starboard but same thing :P And I've had a few of the RW models and they ALWAYS crap out on me within a week, I think it's the light sensor. I always have them for a day working great and then the next day they just don't work.

I think I'll possibly look into some used MP-10's, would it be better to get one, or one for each side so two today?

The WP-10's are just 100% not enough flow for the tank, I have too many deadspots and it's starting to pile up.

I had the same problem as admonition with the gyre in my fusion 30L. Went back to 2 mp10s.

Sweet, thanks everyone for their opinions, it seems MP-10's are probably the best bet!

2 MP10s is probably going to be your best bet. They're just so damn expensive. I'm about to place an order for a pair of RW-4s. I just can't afford to spend $150 for a used MP10. Hopefully I'll be able to get my current RW-4 fixed but who knows.

I have a 5ft long and 14 inch high.

Gyre at 40% pushes the sand on the bottom. I have to put a rock there to minimize it.

It does move the water pretty well throughout the tank though!
