shawnriv
Hi Everyone, I just purchased a 65 gallon four foot long shallow tank. I am wondering if a small Yellow Tang would be okay to add. I completely understand that Yellow Tangs belong in larger gallon size tanks, but I also read that if the tank is long enough is a huge importance as well. Thanks! Link to comment

Some of the Tang Police may tell you no though, but I think any 48" long tank should be fine, Just make sure there are lots of hiding spots, and I would probably try to add last because as it grows it will gain some aggression. lkoechle
I personally wouldn't. I had a Kole Tang in a 4 ft long 85 gallon tank and the Kole is a smaller fish with a 70 gallon recommendation, and I still felt it probably needed more room. It was constantly on the go. So for a bigger fish with a bigger recommended size (100 gallons), I would not. Look into Kole Tangs or Bristletooth Tangs and other smaller species. Link to comment

Agreed. I've seen many reefers house Tangs in smaller tanks and I personally don't find it to be fair. I'm still torn whether or not to give it a try. I'm curious to see more feedback. The tank is four feet long and two feet deep so I would think maybe it would be enough room. Link to comment
Sancho
QT any tang and treat as if they have ICH before putting it into your tank. Personally I have had bad luck with tangs even when I had a large 200 gallon. I stopped messing with them. A Kole tang might be a better fit for your tank. Link to comment
ndrobey
There are a lot of eye-popping yellow fish that would work in that tank. Why does it have to be a tang? Link to comment
ps2cho
You'll be fine in a 60g just get a juvenile as it will take 2 to 3 years before it's anywhere close to full size. I recommend a kole tang over a yellow for that size though. They are slightly less active and aggressive. Link to comment

Cove
Sometimes I feel clowns are suited for 20+ gallons but I still see people them in 10 and under gallons. From the people ive spoke to and the research Ive done ive come to the conclusion that baby tangs will do better in smaller tanks, as they wont have to compete to feed. As the fish grows, so should the tank. Link to comment
Eckozulu
Just get a yellow coris wrasse. They're just as bright as tangs, fairly peaceful, and active swimmers. Link to comment

Hig789
IMO it would be fine for a little while but are you prepared to go a 100g+ system as the fish grows is the question. Link to comment
Matteo
It will be 100% fine in the 65. I have a kole tang and personally love the color.more Link to comment
Hig789
In a year or two when it gets 7"-8" long I don't believe it would be fine in a 65 Link to comment

I am still on the fence about adding a juvenile Yellow Tang. I have started a new post asking everyone's opinion on a stocking list for the new build. Feel free to check it out at the link below. Again, thank you everyone for their feedback and I look forward to the answers I receive on my new post. I will also be documenting and sharing this new build with everyone on Nano Reef. http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/365168-new-65g-reef-build-stocking/ Link to comment
Steensj2004
35 gallon shallow tank here. My yellow tang does fine, added as a juvenile, great fish. IMHO, we are talking about a fish that swims hundreds of miles a day. The idea that by putting it inside a tank that is 100 gallons as opposed to say 40 gallons somehow make s things better is so laughable. The minuscule difference isn't going to make or break the environment for the fish. Sure, it may outgrow my tank, but mine has barely grown of at all in about 6 months. It's your tank, you have to look at it, put whatever the heck you want inside that glass box. Honestly, as long as you aren't throwing a bamboo shark into a nuvo who cares? Most people telling you ,"yes or no "are giving their opinion based off of stuff they've been told or read( also happens to often be someone else's opinion as well). Link to comment
Hammerstone
I wouldn't want to get attached to a fish and then have to get rid of it. Just my opinion. Link to comment
lkoechle
And I know growth rates differ for different fish, but I have scribbled rabbitfish I got in January at 1" long and she's now 5". I read people getting different growth rates for the same species of rabbitfish someone would have one that hasn't grown in 6 months while someone will have one like mine that gets to adult length in the first year. So they can grow quicker than you expect. Link to comment

If you need yellow get a yellow wrasse, mine is big and yeller!!!! As for clowns, they hardly ever leave the leather, don't swim much and they have room to do so. When I finally get my Red Sea 70 gallon, there WILL be a tang of some kind in it! Link to comment

Also my clowns stay near (Under) my Vortech- don't swim a lot haha Link to comment

Matteo
If you want yellow go for a midas blenny! If you want a tang I say go for either a yellow or a Kole Eye! You can always risk getting a lemon peel angel too! Link to comment
SquishyFishy
Nope the C250 its actually less than 70. My lsf has it for the same as online around $1999 and it includes settup. Sometime next year probably. Hoping they have converted the T5s to LED by then!! Link to comment
