Little deformed starfish

I'm sure everyone has seen them at one time or another. Little starfish crawling around the tank. You know they are a starfish but may only have 3 legs or just a mis shape body, anyway....

LFS guy said they will mow down Zoa's and to get rid of any you see. Has that been your experience? I don't really see them hurting anything? I only have a small clump of zoa's and they look fine.. so far...

I see 'em crawling all over the tank and rocks.

Thx All

Asterina starfish? I have them in my sump where my frag rack is and I haven't had any issues. There are a lot of different kinds and some are good and some are bad. The ones in my tank stick to the glass for the most part and just eat algae. I have zoas, mushrooms, monti caps, acros, and digis in my frag rack and I haven't had any issues with them.

I have some that harass my Zoas. Like the poster above me said though -- there are many different species of Asterina (which don't look very different from each other unfortunately). So, you won't really know if you have the good kind or the bad kind until they show you what they do.

I started with one cute little Asterina star which turned into 20+ within a few months. Mine have been pretty reef safe for the most part until I saw three of them eating my zoos. Needless to say they met the true death.

If they are just on the glass, they probably aren't interested in corals. I always found my Asterinas to be rather charming and pretty good at glass cleaning too.

Partially Submerged

You'd know if you had the bad kind. Most of the ones we see are cute, peaceful, and useful (eat detritus and surface film where snails can't go). Most of them seem deformed, or rather they don't seem to have the classic five-tip shape.
