marinehrnt
I have been out of the hobby for many years and looking at getting back into it with a 9 gallon Eheim Aquastyle tank. The stock lighting is not great and was thinking about upgrading to the Coral Compulsion Par30 Vibrance 14w bulb. I have never dealt with anything LED (was using t-5's in the old days) so was curious if this bulb would be suitable for keeping a variety of corals. The tank dimensions are 14 x 12 x 12 (high). Thanks for the help! Link to comment
HarryPotter
I think you would be much happier with this tank, a Nuvo 10 http://www.marinedepot.com/Innovative_Marine_10_Gallon_NUVO_Fusion_Nano_Aquarium_Nano_Cube_Aquariums_Tanks_10_19_Gallons-Innovative_Marine-0I10457-FIAQNCNTTN-vi.html Link to comment

What is the advantage over the Eheim? I have never done a nano tank before so any advice is very welcome. Link to comment

I have never done a nano tank before so any advice is very welcome. It uses low iron (Clearer) glass, has better integrated filtration, and includes a mesh top. It is a very high quality tank, and made for reefing (Compared to the Eheim with the tiny, semi-useless filter) Link to comment

Glad I had not already purchased the Eheim. Link to comment

And what is your budget for the light? Are you hoping for a Softie/LPS tank or do you want some SPS as well? Link to comment
marinehrnt
And what is your budget for the light? Are you hoping for a Softie/LPS tank or do you want some SPS as well? At this point just a softie/LPS tank. Was hoping to stay around a $100 if possible. I think the Coral Compulsion bulb is around $60 but don't know if it would be appropriate for this tank. For $200 you could get an AI Prime, which is perfect for the footprint and can be controlled by your phone. Link to comment

HarryPotter
The AI Prime looks amazing but is a little outside my price range at the moment... Bummer. However, when you get the tank set up you will need to cycle it for roughly a month before adding anything. Maybe during that time you could save up for the AI prime? Put away $3 a day for a month while its cycling and you'll be there Link to comment

I'm not in a rush to get things going so maybe its worth saving up. Would the Prime support any type of coral I wanted? Link to comment

teenyreef
I have the same PAR30 bulb and it's great for the price. I ran it using a cheap lamp timer and installed it in an adjustable desk lamp stand. It's bright enough for a 10g tank. It's not dimmable and you can't control the spectrum. But it's the only light I know of in that price range that will grow SPS. I agree the Prime is a better choice but is quite a bit more. I upgraded to a Nanobox but I still use my PAR30 as a backup light. Link to comment

shawnd08
+1 to this. I ran the CC Par30 for almost a year and was very happy with it. Par bulb + desk lamp = cheap effective setup. I've had no issues with the CC Par30 it kept 3 sps alive for 2 months while I set up my bigger tank. They didn't show much growth but they were healthy and living. My I have palys, zoas, and a cans in there now that grow with 0 issue. For the price it does the trick. Link to comment
teenyreef
There's a picture of the light fixture I used for mine in the first post of my 10g build thread: http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/353546-teenyreefs-10g-fusion/ I think I got it at Walmart or Target. Link to comment
Gooburz
I ran 2 PAR38 bulbs on my 20L for couple of years and I loved them, really great coloring and they grew anything I put into the tank. I think the CC PAR 38 would be great for the tank. Just throw it on a wall timer and you are set. But my personal choice for that tank would be the Reefbreeders Nano-lite, and it is right in your price range and give you the option for a tank mounted bracket or a hanging kit and would grow whatever you wanted to throw into the tank. https://www.reefbreeders.com/shop/nano-lite/ Link to comment
