Ammonium dosing

amphipod

Recommended Posts

Just curious, I got a jar of ammonium bicarbonate, and I want an alternative source of nitrogen for the aquarium than potassium nitrate. So the idea is the ammonium will be turned into nitrites, which will be turned into nitrates than I'll have my desired nitrates to grow bigger and better algae.

That will work but the one issue is that ammonia/ammonium is way more toxic and thus may have undesrible effects on your critters.

so I should dose tiny amounts in long term?

i mean it could work.. trying to sell me some of this "bigger and better algae"? (seriously)

if I ever get propagating fancy macroalgaes I will definitely want to have speedy growth.

I dosed the main tank and what basically happened was the first few days, nothing changed, then the aiptasia all closed up, then a few days later they are just starting to reopen today, all the worms and pods were happy, and I finally got some thin isolated new hairs of algae growing off the rock, they are 1 inch tall in some spots, valonia seems to be getting a little bigger. Cyanobacteria also is adding more on the mat of microbes.
