Hanna test kit reliability

I was testing my water this morning, and my Hanna Alk test read 176 which is about 9.8 dkh. Last night before I went to bed, I tested 170 which is about 9.5. I was not sure why it would go higher in the morning, so I ran another test with my Salifert alk test kit, and it was at 7.6 (Ran this twice)

How accurate are Hanna test kits vs. Saliferts? At this point, I am not sure who to trust. I will be going to my LFS today, and have them test as well, but they use Salifert test kits... so I will assume it will match the 7.6 range that I tested with.

There is a +/- with the Hanna checkers not sure what it is on the alk. I use mine every few days and as long as it is stable I don't worry about it. But if I get a wacky number I check it with the DIY Alk test by Randy Holmes Farley. IMO stability is the main concern.

I have the calcium checker also with the standards kit. It says that the acceptable reading is between 380 and 420 so that shows how much of a difference is acceptable. The checkers are quick and easy but I'd definitely have a backup test.

If you have a handheld ph meter and can get your hands on some .1n hcl you can run a really cheap and easy alk test that doesn't depend on powders or reagents. It goes by how much hcl it takes to drop the ph to 4.5.
