I will tell you all they do is pee and poop, so you will basically be dosing ammonia and nitrate. Also because freshwater fish in captivity can't live without the water conditioner you would also be putting that into your reef tank. Link to comment

Chances are he's using dechlorinated filtered water... Perfectly safe for both SW and FW fish. So while it's a cool thought it doesn't quite make sense to me. So you convert your AIO into a FW display... Except each day the FW tank drains and the water goes into the SW tank. Add the evap from the FW tank and it gets hit double with evaporation. So now you don't have to top off your SW tank but you have to top off your FW tank 2x as much... IMO an easier and more efficient situation would be to set up your FW tank as planned and use the same top off water supplying ATO's on both tanks. You get your FW tank, and both tanks get topped off from 1 reservoir. The only situation I can think of in this scenario would be if you had a fishless reef tank with corals or clams that need a certain level of nitrates - by topping off with "used" water you would be adding nutrients to a tank with none. But you would need an active biological filter in the FW tank. Link to comment
