lobster876
I bought some scarlet hermit crabs from my lfs and one grew to about 4 inches. I saw it kill both a royal gramma and a damsel in one night. The next day it wiped out all of my astrea snails and all of my magrita snails. Link to comment
RG Rude
I'm sorry for your losses. I have less experience than many but I stay away from hermits. I stick with red banded trochus snails to do the majority of my cleaning. Link to comment
lobster876
I have learned my lesson no more hermits for me. Link to comment

Newtybar
That is HUGE for a hermit crab... Link to comment
HarryPotter
I have learned my lesson no more hermits for me. Picture of the hermit? Never seen of a 4" red leg hermit Link to comment

patback
A red hermit and scarlet hermit are not the same thing. What size tank is this in? A tank big enough for one of those to be in and catch healthy fish would be like people grabbing birds mid-flight. Link to comment

Pics of your 4" hermit? LA says scarlets get no bigger than 1.5 inches. Link to comment

seabass
Yeah, definitely not a Scarlet Reef Hermit. Looks kind of similar to a Stareye Hermit. Link to comment
HarryPotter
Nice lightning whelk shell. I have a bunch of shells I might boil soon and put into my tank Link to comment
lobster876
Hes in a bucket right now but he was sold to me as a scarlet as my first hermit crab ever. he turned 2 last month Link to comment
seabass
He's deffinitely cool. Just maybe not for a reef tank. Link to comment
ps2cho
Makes me afraid of my 2" hermit crab. Its killed off all the turbo snails alone...Maybe its time I throw it in the freezer to save the lives of everything else in the tank. Link to comment

seabass
Maybe its time I throw it in the freezer to save the lives of everything else in the tank. That makes me sad. Does it bother snails that are much smaller than itself? I have a large blue-leg, but it won't bother the smaller snails in the tank. Link to comment
ps2cho
I haven't seen it bother any of the snails that are small. Link to comment
seabass
Maybe it just wants their shells. Do you have extra snail shells that size? Link to comment
lkoechle
This is why I don't keep hermits in my display. They have all been banished to the sump. Lol Link to comment
Alexraptor
Number 1 rule in this hobby: Never take a retailer at their word. Always research and firmly establish for yourself the identify of the animal if possible. Personally I've never had trouble with hermits. But then I've always kept smaller species and "hermit-resistant" snails. Link to comment
