Neill.w Posted August 25, 2015 Share Posted August 25, 2015 Just thought people might be interested to see a few photos from some of the reef restoration work I was involved with recently. This was in Vanatu with Dr Kenneth Zimmerman and his team. We collect coral fragments from the outer reef and attach them to propagation cages where they are gown and used to fix barren areas of the reef (normally caused by damaged from tourists) Lots of work but also amazingly good fun! It was a really great group of people to work with. Collecting from the outer reefs Setting up one of the 20 grow cages Documenting coral placements on the racks Some of the team Growth from some of the previous sites 2011 2012 2014 Great trip, we managed to setup about 20 prorogation cages in a week with about 100 dives between us. What is the grow out time? How do you determine where to place it after its grown out? Is it random, that is the species you are growing out? Or are you concentrating on certain species? Thanks Sancho, If you have a look at the bottom of the post you can see one of the previous sites over the years. They grow out pretty quickly. The species are a fairly random sample but they are all identified and documented after they are collected. How many frags did you sneak into your luggage before heading home?
