All depends on what look you want really, and how much you are willing to spend.

(Common brands)

AI

EcoTech

Nanobox

Kessil's

Coralvue

(Lighting types)

LED

T5's

Metal Halide's

Hybrid lights

They all bring a lot to the table and each have a different look and appearance.

If you have a 40 gallon long, you couldn't do the AI Prime unless you got 2 or more of them. And the Nanobox you might have to go bigger than a duo which they get expensive quickly.

If it's a 40 gallon breeder, quality led lighting would be:

2 kessil 360we

Kessil ap700

Nanobox quad

AI hydra 52 (would be a stretch)

2-3 AI prime (would recommend 3)

Ecotech Marine xr30w radion w/ wide angle lenses (would be a little stretch)

2 Ecotech Marine xr15w radion

I would go with the nanobox quad because it is one of the cheaper options and has probably the best led array and includes wifi control via the bluefish mini and is custom. The build quality is amazing.

That's a silly reply.

I'm asking cause I want to know.

It's s silly question, because there are dozens of excellent lighting setups :)

(Oh and dozens of threads on this very topic, best lighting for a 40. Google, my friend :) )

For your 40 (I'm assuming 40b?), are you looking for T5 or LED? Budget? What corals are you hoping to keep?
