Corals as Pests?

Hey Gang....

As some of you may or may not know, I'm currently re-scaping my BC29 with new rock. The main reason was I got tired of getting rid of what I call nuisance corals and other pests (see aiptasia).

So it was of interest that I saw this article titled "Bad Coral" on Reef-Builders. In it, they mention corals that I'm sure most of us are familiar with, xenia, yellow polyps, anthelia (which I personally had to rip out all the time), pocillapora, and, hold still gang, palys and zoas!! In addition to having to rip out anthelia, I also had to deal with the green button polyps and mushrooms. I also had a beautiful rainbow monti I eventually got rid of because it was notorious for encrusting over everything in its' path.

So if you're starting out a new tank, plan out your coral selection carefully to save yourself some headaches later on.

Here's a link to the article:

Pallys, zoas and even GSP are all easily contained if kept on their own "island" in your tank. Even for me xenia stays on its island as long as I keep it trimmed. I have no idea why pocillapora is on that list though lol. Very easy to contain and can make great frags!

Why is it that generic/bland Zoas grow like weeds, but neon vibrant ones grow like snails?

Is this just the reefing gods f***** with me?

Yeah, but for me it's the trimming and pulling them out that's a PITA!! And once they take over that "island"...... Look out. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled clumps of anthelia and yellow polyps out, even used kalk paste to contain them. But they eventually come back. Same with mushrooms.

As for pocillapora, I've read where they can be very aggressive towards other corals that are close to it.

i have not seen pocillapora be aggressive in my tank. I have mine pretty close to a blue ridge coral and so far so good. Ill have to watch for that though!
