Hi all!

So I've fed up with my eshopps nano skimmer constantly breaking down and their awful customer service, so i am on the market for a new nano skimmer

it is for a 20 gallon and i am deciding between

Reef Octopus Nano Skimmer

AquaticLife Internal Mini Protein Skimmer 115

Any thoughts on the best one?

Truthfully there is no best skimmer.

The best skimmer for nanos are

Aquamaxx hob1

Tunze 9001

Tunze 9002

Tunze 9004

Aquatic life nano skimmer

Cadlights pls 50

Hydor slim skim

Hydor slim skim nano

And if you can find a reef octopus hob skimmer

There all great choices for diffrent applications.

I have a 9001 and I love it. Once you get it dialed in they are awesome. Can't comment on the other brands though I have never used them.

Is the tunze okay if i put it in the tank, not the sump? i don't have a sump...

Used a Hydor Nano Slim Skim and using a Tunze 9001 - both are excellent skimmer.

Out of the two which produced a darker Skimmate?

Issac; Don't know if you have made your decision yet... My Tunze experience was poor. The skimmer itself does do a great job it collected all kinds of junk in my jbj45. *** BUT *** you HAVE TO HAVE a ATO. Well you don't have to have one but you will be jockeying that skimmer up and down as your later level changes. Thats where I have an issue with this skimmer. If you read the reviews it kinda alludes to needed a ATO but doesn't really say you need one.

Yanked mine out a few months back and got a Aquamaxx HOB1 used off of eBay. Best decision I've made.

So now I got a 9004 to get rid of.

All in sump skimmers need consistent water levels. That's not a failing of a 9004. Even Bubble Kings need a constant water level. HOB skimmers don't because they create their own consistent water level inside the hang-on-tank box of the unit. If you were to take the Aquamaxx WS1 (AKA the same skimmer as the HOB1 but in the in-sump configuration), it would require a consistent water level. Try the Tunze in the media chamber and put the media in the overflow chamber. Putting a skimmer in the return chamber where the water level fluctuates is a recipe for poor performance.

As for the original poster. You don't have a sump, right? Is this an all in one tank or is it a standard aquarium (like a 20 gallon long or 20 gallon high tank)? If it is an all-in-one I'd recommend a tunze 9001. If it is a standard aquarium I'd recommend a hang on tank skimmer like the Aquamaxx HOB1.

Some will agree/disagree but I'd steer clear of anything CAD lights. Customer service is a case study on what not to do.

edit- disregard. Just saw you went with the octopus. Good purchase.

I just did HEAPS of research on this and ended up buying the Tunze 9001.

i returned the reef octopus because it came in damaged... How is the skimate on the tunze? is it dark

Usually skimmate on nano skimmers are on the light side.Theres not enough organics, like the bigger systems. If you feed a lot or have a heavy bioload, then might be on darkerside

how is the setup and tuning on the PLS elite?

Pretty easy actually. Setup takes 30 seconds, and you can tune it by turning the body in a minute or so.

I tuned mine once at first, then tuned it once after that to get darker skimate.
