Update!

Tank will be here late this week/early next week! My paitience is running Thin! Light wont be here until after September 9th though :(

The plan is to move everything over from my Red sea max 130 after the new one is here and has a little time to cycle. (not expecting a full cycle as im going to move all the established rock over from my current tank.)

Current stock:
1 Speckled rainbow BTA
1 Midas Blenny
1 Randalls goby/ Pistol Shrimp
1 Yasha goby
1 Hammer
some zoas
1 ausi torch
and a few rhodactis
as well as CUC

With this tank i plan on moving into some SPS and more difficult corals but still want it to be a mixed reef. Currently im trying to think of a way to do either a 2 island scape or a 3 island scape.. not sure how they will work out until i have the new tank set up and start playing around with it.Kind of want to try a more minimilist look but not to the extreme.

What suggestions do you guys have?
Not sure if i should get all new sand or reuse the current sand (~6 months old) or a mix of new and current.

Ive always just used the carefully-pile-rock-and-hope-it-doesnt-fall method for scaping but i think i want to try something more sturdy.. not sure how to do that on established rock though.

Also not sure what i want for new stock. I planned the skimmer for a heavy bioload and might run some sort of reactor in the future so i like fish. This is kinda what im thinking right now though:
Group of anthias.. 3-5 possibly. Preferably some of the more hardy species.. Either a Kole or yellow tang or maybe a small fox face. And lastly (not very high on the list of priorities) a clownfish pair. I want the aquascape to be pretty open with plenty of room for swimming.

All thoughts/reccomendations/criticism welcome, Ive had a few tanks before but i am by no means an expert on anything.

Tank is finally here! Building stand tonight and will put up pictures once the glass box is on top! Ordered eheim compact+ 3000 for the return pump, mostly due to the good reviews and the 3 year warranty.

Vertex omega 150 barely fit in the sump. Hopefully since its used it wont have that long of a break in period! Also have the 2 neotherm 150 watt heaters in here, one in the downpipe chamber and the other in the return chamber (layed flat so the water level doesnt matter)

Love this bit. Really for some reason it adds a lot for me haha

Cant get a good photo of the tank till tonight, otherwhys i get the reflection from the sliding glass window in there and thats all you can see

20150907_132933%202_zpse8kyk4ou.jpg

Packaged fairly well, was a tad worried since the Styrofoam on the corners was pushed in but so far the tank looks good. Will do a better inspection tonight when i have some time

Aside from this the tank will be getting wet Thursday for a leak test, and will be getting sand and saltwater in the system this weekend. Will also install and set up apex once the return pump is here and water is in the tank. That way ill configure the outlets for each device and set up controls and failsafes. After a day or 2 of just sand and water ill add a couple pieces of live rock from my current system to help with the bacteria transfer and 1 cup of sand from the current tank. Im hoping my light ships out from dave today or tomorrow, so i would expect it around the thursday timeframe next week. After that i want to transfer some more rock, a hammer coral and some zoas just to do a little more testing before i do the entire transfer. Ill do the full transfer probably the week after.

i am getting a 350 in a month! love seeing your pics. post more =P. a full sump view?

  1. what are you planning to add to the sump? reactor?
  2. what about a fuge?
  3. how hard was the plumbing to set up?
  4. does yours have a separate chiller chamber to the right?

I originally wanted the 250 but people said I shouldn't put a tang / foxface in a 50 gallon tank so I went to a 350. My stock list is similar to yours:

3 anthia

3 firefish

2 clown

1 leopard wrasse

1 yellow tang

1 foxface

1 flame angel

1 coral beauty

The photo with the skimmer is the full sump.. thats my only complaint so far, i think i would have prefered a larger sump to the chiller section to the right. As of right now im considering adding a biopellet reactor but not sure i can fit any reactors in to the sump with the oversized skimmer. Definately no room for a fuge.

I would have loved a 350 but 36" was my limit, so i went with this. And yes i agree that a tang and foxface wont do well in a tank this size but im hoping i can get away with one or the other. Even if its a kole tang or tomni tang as theyre smaller than most. Im Still up in the air with the stocking list as it changes almost daily lol I may trade in my midas blenny as he has been purple since the day i got him in my tank.. and i picked him specifically cause i wanted some yellow in the system. Also considering a potters angel/flame angel/coral beauty instead of the tang/foxface but im worried theyll nip at clams and i want a couple clams down the road. so many choices... Good luck with your tank though! so far im nothing but impressed with it!

in your sump picture, I dont see the chiller section. It's just open space to the right...isn't there suppose to be a wall there?? i am curious how you are going to manage the cables. I saw some people drilling a hole in the wall separating the sump and chiller section to run wires through that. They use the chiller section to put their Apex and pump controllers.

In the 250 there is no wall seperating the "Sections" but the back wall in that spot is completely open to allow for ventalation of the chiller.

Im not sure what i plan on doing with cables yet.. I might run them out the back of the stand and mount all my stuff on the outside/back of the stand. The tank sits off the island in our kitchen so i can just move it out a bit for access back there.

Something else im considering is peeling the black film off the back of the tank on either side of the overflow so i can see in the tank from my island. Not sure about this though.

Thats what i was thinking too but its super easy! 3 pipes, already the perfect size and fit! even has a fail safe incase the main one gets plugged or something. Then underneath hook up the 2 pipes to the above downpipes and the 3rd is just a return with green flexi hose! Super easy to set it all up

good to know! hurry up and get it wet already =P

Need the return pump first! dont think the stock one on the RSM 130 can put out enough water to even get it back to the tank lol hopefully Prime shipping will get me the pump before im home tomorrow!

PS, Its okay for me to leak test with tap water correct?

I would use dechlorinated tap water just to be safe

Maybe i will just pick up some declorinator and toss in there when its full.. cant hurt.. Id rather not run ro water or saltwater as i want to drain it when im done to hopefully pull out any residue/gunk/dust from the system

Looking forward to seeing this go through. I bought my Reefer 250 In July and I've been holding onto it since. Just moved into my new house and rinsed down the entire setup with a hose yesterday.

Did you choose the Sicce 3.0? I just bought one.

So the tank sits off the end of our island in the kitchen.. Im considering removing the black film on the back of the tank so i can see into it from the back side or whenever im sitting at my island. I would try to leave the film over the overflow section in the middle, so it would have about a foot open, then about a foot of the film then about a foot open.. Little worried about doing it cause i dont want to scratch the glass

The film is easy to take off - I took mine off with little to no effort. No scratching on the glass. But like ninja said, I'd take the scape into consideration before taking it off.
