HarryPotter
So after reading about a member's terrible loss due to a water container issue, I'm wondering how safe it is to store salt water in HD buckets for a week or two at a time. Temperature roughly 77 and lid sealed- is that okay? Has anyone ever had an issue with HD buckets? Link to comment
BRN
Idk i've never used them. I've always used food grade buckets. Link to comment

HarryPotter
what was the water container issue? Aviator300. Terrible... Used a new container that somehow nuked the tank. Even if that wasn't the cause, I want to double check that I can store water in these cheap containers http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/364326-reason-for-my-supercrash/#entry5111303 Idk i've never used them. I've always used food grade buckets. Sounds expensive and fancy What brand? Link? Link to comment
ScubaJ
I don't trust LFS jugs. I had one give me a really bad batch and there was shit all on the bottom of the jug from someones previous water change. I use HD buckets. I've never had a problem with them so far. I do clean them thoroughly before use. I have 4-5 of the stackable LFS jugs that I cleaned up and keep... The stackable ones are well worth the $15. Link to comment
patback
I've used Home Depot buckets and ace hardware buckets since I started. Never had an issue. The large grey brute cans are however food grade. In the basement I set up a garbage can with a bulkhead fitting, tubing, and a ball valve set up to it to make large amounts of water at the same time. Believe it or not, I filled it up once and never even used it. Still has 50 some gallons from like over a year ago sitting in it. Link to comment

LynkUK
Home Depot Homer buckets are perfectly safe (HDPE 2 I believe). The member I think you are referring to used a sterilite container (never used them, as I believe the last time I looked at them, they didn't use food grade plastics...or something like that. I just remember having a bad feeling about using them)...the go to container for holder larger amounts of water are Brute containers, which are food grade. Link to comment

ManGups
I have always used home depot buckets(homer's orange) - mixing water, stored water, infact used it to move livestock also (6hrs drive) etc and never had any problems. I would suggest just wash it nice before you use the new one.. Link to comment

braaap
Flip the bucket over. If it says HDPE on it on the bottom you are fine. Just blast it out with hot water for 2 or 3 mins when you bring it home. Also never take the top bucket of the stack. Pick the 5th or 6th one down. Link to comment

Pick the 5th or 6th one down to avoid getting returned buckets? Ill make sure to wash them in the future before using. Link to comment
ReefWeeds
I use home depot buckets and like Braaap said, I always take one from the middle of the pile. Not necessarily for returned reasons, but there's always a ton of dust and crap floating around that store. I then get home and let the bucket soak in some vinegar and water to sterilize it before i use it for RODI and/or saltwater. Link to comment

Marc.The.Shark
Home Depot can Blow Me!! They refuse to employ any cashiers & only have those damn self checkout lines open. The only cashier is in the contractor area. I was in there one day & this little old lady was trying to check out using the self checkout & couldn't figure it out. The one person that was assigned to the 4 self checkout registers so that you don't light finger anything was disinterested in helping her at all. I helped her use the self checkout & said I'll never come back to this shit hole that doesn't appreciate the money I spend. Lowe's always has 2 or 3 people at the registers to check you out, that's my spot & this is my rant! lol. But I'm sure their buckets are okay......if you like shit hole buckets. Link to comment
ndrobey
People often use HD buckets to carry stuff that they are buying to the checkout. With the new minimum wage hikes that are being ushered in you better get used to it. The "People" that used to do those jobs will be priced out of the market with a $15 an hour rate. I have bought the white seven gallon containers from USP to use as an ATO storage. Helps me extend to a full week of ATO fill when its dry in winter and I'm burning my wood stove. http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=23470 Link to comment

Plus who wants those ugly orange buckets, prob only people fron Florida! Lol. Who started this thread anyway?! Oh..... there you go! Link to comment
RK_tek
I used Lowes buckets for 2 years to store/mix water in. Now i just use them during water changes to carry it from the brute. Home Depot often has better prices on tools. That being said, HD tends to market toward the small contractor whike Lowes is consumer oriented. However, when i was im construction, i had(still have) a lowes credit card and only use HD for products/brands lowes does not carry. I buy sandpaper and saw blades at HD, thats about it Link to comment
