Razor or Nanobox

I know this topic has come up numerous times but is the Nanobox really that much better then the rest? I have a 20 long (would like mixed reef). I really do want a Nanobox, but seeing razors sold for $200-$250, I feel like it'll be the better choice. People have had alot of success with the razors so I'm sure it's not a bad light. Would you choose to save the extra $200 and spend it on corals?

I have a razor now and I love it but at the time if I had the extra money I would probably have a nanobox duo right now instead the razor has great pucks but nanobox is just so much more controllable and visually better.

I wouldn't say it's better then the other named brand lights out there, but it is a good light it will get the job done. In that price range you you're best bet is a nanobox

I personally wouldn't choose a razor for any tank I ran. They are good lights and will grow anything, and while I do like the fact you can mount them on the tank, they give off a very 'disco' lighting effect. As in the color spectrums are intense and don't blend, giving a very unnatural look. I've seen them over many tanks and just not something I would invest in after seeing. I have heard the newer ones might be better.

I would save up for a light that I know I will be happy with in the long run, and not settle.

Have you considered AI's or Radions? Pricier but impressive. Whats your budget?

I have a Razor over a 12L right now and a NB retro duo over my 29 biocube. In my mind, there is NO comparison between the two, which is why I just ordered a duo to go over the 12L :)

And to elaborate: I cannot dial in the lights on the Razor anywhere near as good as I can with the NB. the colors are better, much crisper and the controllability is far superior in my mind.

I just received a nano Box duo and can say there is no disco effect like the the razor, the nanobox led pucks blend so well and the spectrum is arguable the best out there for led pucks and the bluefish mini is awesome.

I'm very happy with my nanoboxes - the light they put out is so good.

One thing to consider, if you like it to get reallly blue, upgrade 4 channel.

I'm trying to keep my budget under $400 for lights. I've considered Radions also. Maybe I will just bite the bullet and get a Nanobox duo. The lights I have my eyes set on are Radions (used, even gen2), Razor, and Nanobox duo.

Razors are nice solid units, but I prefer the easy and controllability of the nanobox, the Storm X was nice, but the new bluefish units are a cake walk to use, Plus it will create the light graph for you.

Another downside to the Razor is the power supply for it is massive. I would rather have an extra plug(s) then the massive power supply. But this is a matter of opinion.

I have a Radion Gen2 and really like it :)

Supports clams, rapid growth and great color SPS, etc.

NanoBox lights are also awesome though

Personally, I've had both lights as well and to me, there isn't any comparison between the razor and nanobox. The look of the nanobox is very clean and the controllability is a huge plus as well. The razor is a good light, but didn't do it for me as far as aesthetics and how my tank looked.... Good luck with your decision.

I TOTALLY agree, Muraki. The power supply is a beast. And the light is kind of heavy. I also am not a fan of the rimless mount. I don't trust that it will actually hold the light up and not crack the tank. It's shoddy, IMO.

I guess I'll have to make my decision on a Radion or Nanobox then! I'll be waiting on Harryjsinger's little lighting experiment. Thank you all for chiming in on your experiences.

Ahhh don't wait on that. I'll set it up briefly when I get home and take a bunch of pictures comparing the two, but the growth experiment is a no go.

NanoBox has better customer service and pucks though

I'll be waiting on those pics then! Growth is a factor of course, but we all know we want our tanks to look good :).

To be fair on the powersupply issue though -

My nanobox duos take up 2 plugs each (4 total). One for fan and one for power supply. This adds a lot of wires in the tank.

Nanobox takes my vote. I have a minitde and really like the build quality, color of the LED's, custom exterior colors of the frame(just about whatever you want), no disco effect, great personal CS from Dave, WIFI mini included, etc. I have seen a razor in action and was like "meh". The disco effect was apparent and the colors were not that great.
