isaacharry
Hi there, What would be your votes on the most fluorescent corals out there? It can be a zoanthid, SPS, LPS, anything! Post your favourite fluorescent corals under actinic lighting, i am looking for a nice "show piece" Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
There are a ton of fluorescent corals and frankly I don't think there is a way to specifically choose just one type. There are ricordea fl., zoas and palys, LPS (wellso's, plate corals, etc.), and even SPS corals can look incredible. I have a blueish/purple digi with amazing polyps that are super bright. Grafted montipora cap. and chalices can also come in a bunch of different colors. Link to comment
isaacharry
thanks for the input, I'm looking at some brain corals, most that i find are green, i saw some red ones but i heard that red fades under LED's any truth to this? Also can i keep SPS with the AI Prime Link to comment
12_egg_Omelette
I think the problem you're going to have with SPS is that for bright colored coral you need a very stable system with low nutrients. I find it's hard to have thriving vibrant corals along with thriving vibrant LPS/zoas. You can find a happy middle grown where things look great but neither will be the best they can be. Also can i keep SPS with the AI Prime You can keep SPS with an AI Prime. It really just comes down to how far the coral is from the lights. What do you mean by "brain" corals? There are so many different species that just get labeled as "brain" corals that it's tough to know which you are referring too. I think the problem you're going to have with SPS is that for bright colored coral you need a very stable system with low nutrients. I find it's hard to have thriving vibrant corals along with thriving vibrant LPS/zoas. You can find a happy middle grown where things look great but neither will be the best they can be. I feel like the difficulty of SPS is a bit overblown. The big thing is to start slow (as always) and just keep an eye on the tank. I have mostly LPS corals in the display but I also have a larger pink monti cap in there as well and everything is doing well. Currently running a Current Orbit Marine along with a 2 bulb T5HO fixture right next to it. In my sump is where I have most of my SPS. In there I have three monti caps, two acros, two digis, and a birdsnest and everything is doing great. That's being lit by a PAR38 bulb and everything is growing incredibly well in there. The only issue I have with it is the color on the bulb (got it cheap off eBay) and it has a ratio of 2:1 of whites to blues. Even with that poor of a spectrum, the blue digi has amazing color. So i have LPS, SPS, and softies in my tank and they are all doing well. I do have a bit of a disaster when it comes to the lights unfortunately. The tough part is with the lighting. I think for a display tank, having a deeper tank makes it a lot easier to get SPS, LPS, and softies in there simply because you can use the depth of the tank to your advantage. With a shallow tank, you only have a few inches to play with so you don't have as much of a variety of light intensities in the tank. Link to comment
12_egg_Omelette
The difficulty comes with acropora which more sensitive to parameter changes, I'm not saying it's hard to keep at all. Monti, birdsnest, digi, undata, stuber stag etc all easy SPS corals. Link to comment
Scorched
Its been my mission to find each of the most vibrant coral in each color. Violet - Garf Bonsai (not very flourescent though) Blue - Oregon Tort, Blue Mushrooms, Tubbs Zoa. There aren't too many blue LPS maybe a chalice or favia with some blue Green - Almost anything, the brightest is probably Hydrophora Yellow - Gold Torch, 24K or Gold Strike Leptoseris, Phoenix Montipora, Pot of Gold Favia Orange - Orange Hammers, Orange Leptoseris, Orange Acans Red - Quite a few again, Setosa, Blastos, RBTA Pink - Bubble Gum Chalice, Meteor Shower Cyphastrea I have most of them in my tank unless the coral is insanely expensive. Over $100-200 per frag is really hard to swallow. This is under daylight, so multiple it times 2 with blues, times 10 with blue led and yellow sunglasses on. LOL Link to comment

basser1
This is the only shot I could find of my kryptonite candy cane colony. It can be easily seen from across the room even with all my LEDs turned up. And with just actinics, it looks like glow sticks...... Link to comment

thirdchild
I'd say $50 - $75/frag. They use to be pricier but it's possible to get one for a reasonable price now if you're patient. One warning though, they have very long stingers, so best to keep it where the flow keeps it away from other stuff. Link to comment
isaacharry
so i ended up getting a space invader pectinia but it didn't ship well and lost a lot of color Link to comment
thirdchild
Just feed it and it should perk up. Maybe a couple of times a week until you think it's established. Link to comment
