help with tank

I recently got a good deal on a 45g rimless tank and the owner at my lfs suggested a 1" drain and 1" return on my tank... So we got everything drilled and plumbed.... Now I did a leak test and the gurgling on the drain is just consistent and annoying..

I did a ball valve on the return which is running on a mag 7 which seemed to help quite it down and did a reverse dorso on the bottom of the drain...

That helped the gurgling a bit but still does it every other minute..

My friendthan suggested a 1500gph overflow box. That would help as well...

Any suggestions other than the overflow box?

If it is quiet for awhile then noisy, it's flushing. This happens when a drain can't keep up and a siphon is temporarily created. The siphon breaks as the water level drops.

Do you have a Durso at the top too? A pic of your setup might be helpful. Try restricting the return even more.

For a truly quiet drain, you need a siphon drain with an emergency drain. A gate valve is put on the drain to dial in the siphon. And since this state isn't guaranteed to remain constant, you need a regular emergency drain to prevent problems. Depending on the height that they were drilled, you might be able to use the return hole as the emergency drain, and run the return plumbing over the top of the tank.
