GTi's 10 Gallon IM NUVO Fusion

GTi

Recommended Posts

Tank arrived today and is currently doing a leak test.

This is a downsize, simplification of my CADlights 34 gallon, build thread here: http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/342305-gtis-cad-lights-34g-mini-ii/

Stocking list so far are carry-overs from the CADlights: Red Firefish, Conch, Ricordea, GSP, Gorgonian, Zoas and some clean up crew.

I have a Mini TIde on order from Dave.

Deciding between using one of my MP10s or upgrading the return pump and adding a spinstream. The MP10 will have more control but the spinstream is a cleaner look.

Most likely. My only concern is that some reefers have had trouble with the media basket if they upgrade their return pump. Now it might be that they have blocked some of the holes with the bags of media or it could be 101 other things that are nothing to do with the media basket. I might ask Stevie about this.

Update: I had a quick reply from Steve. He's used these for years on a 16 and said as long as you don't block all the shelf holes and keep you floss changed, you shouldn't have any problems. So, yes, I will be upgrading to InTank soon!

It passed the leak test! Set up will be delayed about 10 days as I have a work trip coming up.

I have some 'live' Fiji Pink sand and a couple of pieces of dry reef saver rock.

I need to work out a scape and then get a cycle going.

The breakdown of my CADlights is mostly done. Just a couple of colonies left that I don't want to transfer over.

It seems the jury is out on whether to upgrade the return pump / use a spinstream / add a powerhead.

I want to make this tank simple. With the one fish and the conch it's low bioload and I'm aiming to handle parameters with water changes and possibly basic chemical media. If they get behind, the softies and gorg should be able to handle it. I have an MP10 but find it a hassle cleaning the glass around it and taking it out to clean every couple of weeks. I do like the flexibility and the fact it doesn't put a lot of heat in to the tank. I also have a Koralia Nano 240. Although not as flexible as the MP10, it can go on the back wall and blend in better. Or I can upgrade the stock pump with or without a spinstream. I have heard the spinstream can be noisy and can blow water out of the tank if the return is upgraded.

As I already have the MP10 and Nano 240, I think I'll play around with those first. Although the softies don't need a lot of flow, the gorg will like it. I also have a few other pumps and may try those out as well.

If I get to one of the frag swaps in my area, I may make an exception to the current 'no stonies' rule and get a bright orange plate. As they grow slowly, the impact on CA and Alk should be manageable with water changes.

I'll be modifying my current screen top to fit this tank - the frame is narrower and mesh less obtrusive.

I was considering a fuge in chamber 2 but I'm going to see how things do without it. I'll bring my mangrove over but see how the tank does without chaeto.

Got it wet today!

Added Dr Tim's One and Only and 10 drops of ammonium chloride (which should have given 3 ppm but measured around 2 ppm ammonia) to get the cycle going.

I also went to a frag swap and picked up a plate, gorgonian and a couple of zoanthid frags - My Clementines and Radioactive Dragon Eyes or something similar. The vendors had goofy lighting - the Clementines looked red and the Dragon Eyes yellow.

Just got back from a work trip and my Tide had arrived! I have it temporarily set up over the CADlights tank for now and have sold the Radion. It's a nicely made light and the control that the Bluefish mini offers is great. When I finish breaking down the CADlights I'll switch the light over to the Nuvo and then post some pics and more detail.

I checked parameters and there was no ammonia or nitrite and 20 ppm nitrate. That either means we're nearing the end of the cycle or my little helper elves didn't dose ammonium chloride each day... I bumped it up to 2 ppm and will measure ammonia and nitrite tomorrow evening - fingers crossed.

Just tested nitrite and it was zero! I dosed ammonium chloride 28 or so hours ago.

I just dosed again and will check ammonia and nitrites tomorrow and as long as they're zero I'll get ready to do a large water change and transfer the livestock over!

I did another 2 days of dosing. I checked ammonia and nitrite and they were both zero. After a 5 gallon water change, I added a few micro brittle stars and snails just to ensure that everything is safe before transferring the Firefish. A couple of the nassarius are quite large and look a bit out of proportion in this tank. Can't wait to see wha tty turbo looks like in it! He needs a shell cleaning first as he has ulva and some other gunky algae growing on him.

I bought a PAR30 bulb from Gena and have that in a reading lamp over a 2.5G quarantine/observation tank where I have been kidnapping micro brittle stars from the 34G. I will also use it to observe corals coming from my 34G after they have had a peroxide dip to make sure there are no undesirable algaes transferring over to the new tank.

A Nuvo 10! Saw it in the shops the other day... tempted to get one for the office

It's a nice little tank. Well made. The worst part is the screen top and the label on the front that wasn't straight!

What an awesome little tank! Can't wait to see it once you put your corals in!

Thanks! Right now I have a Yuma (from Lalani), a few zoas, a couple of small gorgonians and a nice plate coral. It's going to look a bit empty for a while! This is going to be all softies with just the plate as the exception.

Sounds like a great stocking list so far! I really love the gorgonian you posted prior in the thread.

Here's an older picture of the other Gorg. It's meant to be in high flow and it maintains a flat, fan shape. Mine has gone more like a bush!

I think once I set my bigger tank back up I think I'd like to attempt an easier gorg. They are much nicer than I ever gave them credit for. Both of these pictures look great.

If you get a photosynthetic one, they're very easy. All I do is leave them alone and give an occasional puff with the baster to remove any algae or shedding. With fish in the tank, they must eat some food particles. I've seen some of the gorgs with larger polyps eat baby brine shrimp.
