My Stand Design Strong Enough for Aquarium?

Admonition

Recommended Posts

Here are my plans for an aquarium stand to hold my Fusion 30L. Assuming it holds all thirty gallons of water (which it technically won't), plus ten pounds of rock, plus fifty pounds for the tank itself, and about twenty pounds of random equipment (over estimated), it should need to hold about 330 lbs minimum. My sketch up below is comprised of all 2x4s. I plan to use 2.5 inch construction screws (that self counter sink), as well as wood glue between boards that screw together. I'll also top the frame with 3/4 inch plywood for the tank to sit on.

My question is, does anyone see an issue with my design and the weight I need to hold?

Glad I could help! You building a stand for a similar tank?

Same tank, and I've been dealing with trying to build my own tank but not being handy at all. The hardest thing for me, is that my wife wants it to be pretty so I'm trying to find a way to spruce it up some.

Oh well perfect, I'll have to check out your build thread for the 30L when you do it. And yeah, I have pretty much the same issue. I plan to skin it and finish it up with some nice molding and such so it 'looks pretty.'

Here is my DIY for my 45g JBJ. Yours will be plenty strong! Its funny because I could have bought the stand made for the tank for about 200 but did my own and it still cost me about 115ish.

This is my DIY stand, I even put a towel hanger on the side of it :)

That will hold way more than 330 pounds. There's enough strength there to support a car easy.

I agree with this...... You can probably support 3000lb's on this if evenly spread on the stand maybe even more.

Plus whatever you use on the oustide of the initial frame will most likely add structural support.

This was the stand I built for my 22L. I did not have most the extra 2x4's that you have labeled in Blue or the center green because the panelling I have going around the stand is solid 1" x 12" boards going vertically up and down. The only place I added the 2x4's you have in blue is on the very front side of the stand since I do not have any vertical panelling, and just a 2x6 as a beam to support a 5ft span. (Designed the stand to hold a 75 gallong tank)

I will update this with a few more pictures in a moment.

Wow love the stand, very clean.

Thank you! I can barely move it with one other person. Heavier then I would like. The stand you have designed will hold the tank you want without question. I suggest using a nice thick piece of quality plywood for the surface the tank will sit on. I used 3/4" since I went with a rimless tank and I wanted to ensure I had a flat surface. :)

Yeah I planned to use 3/4 inch plywood for the top so the tank can rest on it :) And then probally 1/2 inch for the sides to skin it. What did you use to water proof the wood and then paint it?

I just primed it and then I found a decking paint that I really liked. I figured it is for outdoor use, so why not for my stand. So far I have no complaints and the texture is nice when rolled on.

Oh nice build! What did you use to paint and water proof it?

Just spray paint basically. An outdoor version that prime's and seals. I prefer DIY because I made my own hanging kit as well for any light fixture mounting

You could probably fill that tank with lead and the stand would hold it. My last stand was just a simple 2x2 frame with 3/4" ply and it was plenty strong enough. Even my current stand is just 3/4" ply without any frame and its pretty damn sturdy.

Lol that's fine by me! I just wanted to make sure the tank wasn't going anywhere. Plus, I'd never hear the end of it from the wife if the stand collapsed in the living room.

Save a tree use 1x4s instead of 2x4s 1/2 plywood will be fine for the top. The stand will still handle twice the weight you are putting on it.
