When is it a reef tank? (The Scottish lesson)

So it might sound like a stupid question but, when is a FOWLR considered a reef tank, with a single frag? With many corals growing well? Crammed! Something in between?

For example if a Xenia catches a ride with a live rock form the LFS, and put into what was going to be a FOWLR would it then be a reef tank?

I would say that an aquarium is a "reef" when you have a mental, educated list of future corals and ideas of where you would like to place those corals on your rock work.

And if you have a hitchhiker on a live rock and decide to research it and try to make it flourish I think that's kindof a reef tank then too.

A mental list? Educated? Planning?

#### I don't own a reef!

I say it's a reef tank when you have reef building animals! Stony hexacorals, vermetids, tubeworms, bryozoans, some foraminiforans, some sponges, etc the biological reef builders.

Heck I'd go so far to say if you are keeping a stromatolite in your tank, you have a reef tank.

When you actively try to grow coral. A tank with hitchhiker Xenia or polyps is a tank with polyps or Xenia. A reef tank is a tank that you purposely went out of the way to try to make them thrive.

As soon as you start keeping the water cleaner/more stable than what is the minimum required for fish. Things like worrying about Ca, Mg, Alk, salinity, etc. Also choosing fish with any thought to coral/invert predation would also put you into reef category, IMO.

Nice! Mine started with on a year ago and now I have a nice sized colony with like 15 heads.

In fact, in going to try to frag a few off today to see if I can trade them local :)

Before I read your post I was 100% sure it would read:

"Pix or it didn't happen" hehe!

Well, all reefs start with base rock. So I think your tank is a reef tank when you have the intention of mimicking a reef habitat.

When you have a tank you are prepared to grow corals in.

IMO a true FOWLR is a tank with non reef safe fish, ie puffers, triggers, etc that would actively destroy a reef tank.

A tank with a rock and a couple of clown fish under a cheap light is just a cheap saltwater tank.

A tank with reef safe live stock & the lighting/filtration to maintain coral is a reef ready tank.

You got any ideas on what it is?

Want to help, but can't tell. I was joking around, no offense meant!

From this view it looks like a mushroom, but don't really know
