Thinking of upgrading from to a IM no 20 gallon

Hello everyone I'm thinking of upgrading my tank to a nuvo 20 gallon i currently have an Aqua japan 16 gallon cube which sucks. Ive had so many issues with it that i regret not thinking things through and bought it cuz i thought it was a good deal. I want to know if it is worth the risk or not?

here are my issues with the tank.

-For starters the room between the back of the aquarium and the false wall is 2.5 inches

-The false wall has sprung a leak making the water level in my display and the rear chamber the same exact level.

-The cube is so tall and the space is so limited that i need tongs and a ladder to remove my filter media making it dangerous and messy.

-The aqua japan has rounded and beveled edges making it hard for me to make a cover for it. So i can't get a six line wrasse. :(

Is it worth the risk

-I have a clown pair in a tank for four weeks now and I'm scared of over stressing them into the new aquarium. Then again this is the only livestock I have.

-My tank just finished cycling about five weeks ago. How do I go about doing this with minimum stress to the fish?

I wouldn't throw a six line in a tank like that. If you want to do this, you set up your tank and let it cycle like you did your first one. Place your rock test make sure it can process your ammonia. You can keep the old tank as a QT tank.

Sorry it's late, I don't even know if that makes any sense. If you don't get any replies by the time I wake up in the morning I'll go back and make sure this makes a lot more sense.

yea i wasn't planning on adding the wrasse right away. I was worried that it would have to cycle again because in reality the tank would go in the same place my aqua japan tank is in.

You would think you wouldn't need to, but bacteria sometimes acts weird when introduced into brand new tanks from an established tank. You can speed stuff up by using Dr. Times one and only. By chance do you happen to be in Florida? There are some awesome live rock vendors there that I would highly suggest that I'm going to use on my new bigger setup coming up.

The nice thing is everything should be pretty much similar you will be able to use the same salt mix you have and it should be the same temperature since it's in the same house.

No I'm on the opposite end hahaha I'm in cali hahah. Yeah i was thinking of just transferring the rock and sand and same water plus adding two more gallons hahah. Guess ill just stick to the aqua japan bummer :/

If you have a lot of rock you can take half out and then check how it's cycling and then move the fish over and afterwards move the remaining rock from the old to the new. I'm pretty cautious though. You could also just take everything and move it over as well.

yeah i think I'm going to take everything over. Ive heard that new sand is a must what is your input on this. My fish seem to be thriving in their aquarium so I'm just scared.

Well you release a lot of crap trapped in the sand when you move it over. I think if you move the sand stir it up put the rock and the water in, do a couple 20% water changes every day and you'll be fine. Again I'm overly cautious.

You could also throw some prime in there to deal with the ammonia.

Does the new tank HAVE to be in the spot of the 10g?

A better way (I did an upgrade of a developed tank) would be to set up the new tank with your LR and new sand, wait a few days, and then move the fish over. I did that just because I was convinced the cloudy water was dangerous, but I dunno if thats logical.

Like I moved all my LR, waited three days, and then moved over all my coral and fish.

Yeah thats understandable and yea unfortunately it has to be in the same spot as my other one was in. Like i said this tank has only been running for about a month or so, So I'm pretty sure the sand is not that bad.

I honestly think you'll be fine taking the sand out, you could always rinse it with RO/DI water a couple times until it's no longer cloudy like you do with rice. Please tell me you rinse your rice too.

If ur tank is just 5 weeks old .. It does not have a lot of crap.

Take ou the first put in a bucket of tank water (good amount) Just move the water sand into new tank. Add dr Tims - Wait for an hr for sand to settle and add the fish.Top up with fresh batch up saltwater

You will be fine ..I have done this couple of time and not lost a single livestock.

Just to be on the safe side keep up with water chances every 2-3 days and test.

So you guys i made the switch to the IM Nuvo fusion 20 so far I'm in love with the tank and looks hell of a lot sexier than the other one. My clownfish seem happy and have since found a place to spend the night. I redid the aquascape because of the size and shape difference. So far so good. Also i added a bottle of DR. Tims one and only just to make sure nothing gets whack too quick. Hopefully everything turns out fine... Keeping my fingers crossed. Wish me luck :)

That looks awesome!

Does the tank need to be moved 2-4" to the right to make it center on the sand? I'm OCD like that haha

Is your tank in the garage?

Yeah it is surprisingly its been really hot in summer and I've only had temperature swings of maybe .08 - 1.0 degree its out of direct sunlight and all temperature controlled with a fan an a reef keeper lite. I use the garage as a study, due to the fact that my parents always have people over. Being a student this is my getaway to study and finish my homework so i decided i would put the tank here.

No it just looks like that. I made a table out of wood to hold my aquarium and my printer lol. So it looks like its off centered in the picture in reality it sits on the side closest to where i can see it. Haha

Yeah the garage has an air conditioner that runs 24/7 lol well the house does it bleeds into the garage. Yeah temperature swings don't really happen in the tank.
