Begow's Fusion 30L // Lets Do This One Right

Recommended Posts

Well I came across a great deal in Orlando for an Innovative Marine Fusion 30L for $160! I couldn't pass it up and I pick it up this Saturday!

Equipment:

Innovative Marine Fusion 30L

Custom Built Stand (made by me, hopefully)

Cobalt Aquatics Neo-Therm 75W (Will need to upgrade probably)

Innovative Marine Desktop Reactor (Carbon/GFO)

inTank Media Basket

Nano-Box Mini Tide First Gen

Jebao WP-10

Tunze Nano Auto Top Off

Nano Flipper Magnent, still not sure if this will work on the 30L

Livestock:

15 lbs super seeded live rock from my Fusion 10

I'm going barebottom bros, white 1/4 inch starboard!

20 lbs of baserock added to fill into the tank, my current liverock should seed this very well.

Pair of Black Snowflake Clowns from my current setup

Plans:

A larger light, preferably LED's but may go T5 because of cost.

Another Jebao WP10, or maybe two Jebao RW4. Although I would love an MP10QD

A larger heater

A fan for cooling since I have temperature issues from time to time.

Innovative Marine Filter Sock attachment for 30L

Livestock Plans:

RBTA or two

Mainly LPS, Torches, Frogspawn, Hammers, Acans. I am out of the high demand of SPS. I will keep zoanthids and Palythoas as well.

Midas Blenny

Longnose Hawkfish

To Be Continued

Here is the only picture I have of the tank:

This weekend I will be giving the new tank a vinegar soak, and let all the pumps in it run overnight. I will be checking for leaks and cleaning it then as well. I'll also be cleaning all of my pumps, and hopefully start the stand. I really have no idea on how to build anything from scratch but I'll do my best!

More pics and info to follow this weekend!

Hell yeah. Following along! If you're ever in South Miami I have some random frags (mushrooms, a Yuma, maybe a Duncan if I can frag it) with your name on them :)

Sweet thanks buddy!

I'm looking forward to getting this tank running. It'll be nice to have a larger tank finally. I'm excited for my fish options!

Noice! I have the 20 kicking now...updating thread as we speak.

Finally! :P

dude I'm so stoked. My wife is excited too because she wanted a bigger tank as well!

Whatcha going to do about a stand? Wish I was closer, would be fun to knock one out together.

Dude that would be awesome. I think I'm just going to go with a simple 1x3 frame, then put some plywood or paneling around it. Nothing to crazy, I may try to improve it with some framing. I really want to have a oversized platform for it to sit on that overhangs the actual stand. I think there being some room around the stand and not just perfectly lined up.

I would like to add some shelves on the inside for all my storage.

Your stand is beautiful, how much did that butcher's block run you if you don't mind me asking? I plan on putting my rock in a dark bucket with heat and water movement for a week prior to setting up the new tank. Hopefully that will clean everything up, and I'll probably do two 40% water changes within that week. I have a red slime problem right now, but hopefully that process will clean everything up and get rid of some of the detritus too.

The real thing here is I need to transfer my Pom Pom safely, I've had this guy for almost a year now and he's gotten huge and lived through a lot! Probably my favorite thing in the tank!

I am looking at adding shelves as well, but not a priority right now.

My bundle of red oak was about $55. GET A KREG Jig, watch some videos, and use it. Your tank will be a tank, even with poplar.

The butcher block I only used a small part of the leftover I had from my kitchen island install. Probably not cost effective for your build. Check on craigslist or Ikea for better prices...or just use some 3/4" plywood with some trim around the raw edges. Seem to remember you are planning on painting it, right? 1/4" plywood for doors and sides are cheap.

Below is a pic of the sketchup I made for the tank. You will have to scale yours up to size, and can probably use support legs between two doors for the 30".

How do I get a nice finished look on raw plywood though? It's rough etc. I don't even have a band saw dude, I really need to step up my carpentry tools.

You don't need a bandsaw...I don't have one.

This is the intermediate step of my build. I routered out a recess for the plywood sides to fit nicely inside...but you don't even need to do that. YOu could cut is one inch longer and wider than the inside size of the frame openings and just use glue and brads to secure it to the inside.

For the top, a piece of 3/4" plywood cut a little larger than the top opening can be scremed directly into the top, and you can cut some of the 1x3 down to use as trim around the raw edge of the plywood to hide it. Does that make sense?

If you use natural wood (AKA not plywood) for the top, DO NOT screw it down into the frame. Plywood is dimensionally stable and will not shrink or expand much, but regular wood will. If you restrain it it will pull itself apart. Look at how I secured mine in my build.

This is what I think I'm going to do, but not with such heavy duty wood as I feel I probably won't need to use 2 x 4's. And I won't add a lip, I feel that impedes cleaning. I'll just add a platform. What's your opinion on the MDF?

Link to comment

I think that is fine...not a huge fan of MDF near a tank...it will soak up spilled water which will in time affect structural integrity. I used hardwood plywood, not much more in terms of cost. Either will work, just paint and seal well for MDF for sure.

Does the plywood have a smooth coating? The MDF isn't going to be apart of the load bearing build I don't believe, right?

You should visit your local Petsmart. I think that their stands (at least for a 20 long) are $100, which may be cheaper than DIY

Yeah, that is a good point...MDF for skin is not weight bearing. It is smooth, but I sanded mine to 220 and it is like glass after staining.

Again...don't let me make you over think it. What that guy was building was strong. If you like it and feel comfortable with it, go for it!

Mine was significantly less than $100 out of hardwood...and a hell lot better than the crap at Petsmart.

Yeah I agree, petsmart would be easier but lumber is super cheap!

Also, do either of you know if it's a good idea to use two seperate pieces of starboard for my BB? It's super expensive to get a piece my length, but if I can get two and just cut them to size ya know? Any ideas?

I bet as long as there isn't a space in between them you'd be fine.

I don't really understand StarBoard. Is it just to protect the bottom of the tank?

Yeah, and I don't like the look of a glass bottom.

Stone texture paint on bottom side ftw

If like look of butcher block search your local cl for bowling alley slabs. Can find all the time by me. And can find deals if look. One day I'll get to making dining room table out of slab

Thanks buddy! :D

Well I ordered this tonight, because I really really hate doing water changes and was just thinking to buy a Maxi-Jet for water changes but this is much cheaper and people seem to be thrilled with it!

Tomorrow I'm going to call the place in my town and get the Starboard custom cut, I'll pick it up on the way to work!

So I kept my Fusion 10, and a Fusion 20 on this shelf here:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-and-Gardens-Square-4-Cube-Organizer-Multiple-Colors/29741114

To test it I sat on it, and bounced up and down and wiggled around and it has worked ever since.

I found this today:

Now this would be same height and depth, but would fit the new 30L on it with easy, what do you guys think? yay or nay?

You would put it somewhere in the middle shelf? The shelves themselves look kind of weak... On the other organizer you put it on the top

If you look at the multiple pictures on the 8 -- cube version you can lay it on it's side which would be the same 30 inch height as my current stand. I would just put it on top of that.

OH that would look pretty awesome. TBH you might need to do some basic reinforcements of the corners or such, but that seems like a pretty cool stand for a AIO
