truels2
I stumbled upon a few post about people talking about using there power head to clean off there live rock during water changes. Is this a good practice or should i leave the live rock alone? I dont want to cause a spike in water levels and i also dont want to take off the beneficial bacteria that lives on the rock. Any recomendations here? Link to comment
Arce
Your not removing the bacteria. Not blowing rocks off will cause a spike since wastes will get trapped in crevices. Blow them off every once in a while to keep it clean. I usually did it twice a week, and made sure i had a filter sock running to catch the crap. Link to comment
ninjamyst
it's probably safer to use a turkey baster if you have corals on the live rock Link to comment
truels2
Thats what i was thinking. I also do have a filter sock stuffed with pillow stuffing. Plan on changing that once a week Link to comment
xCry0x
Whenever I water change I intentionally stir up as much crap as I can. I turkey baster rocks I know build up junk and do one rock at a time with my siphon right there to suck the dirty water out. I also started systematically stirring the surface of the sand with a feeding tube while I siphon to get some of the gunk build up out. There are a couple relatively dead spots on my sand bed that throughout the week get a bit of a build up and have had cyano issues in the past - I target those for stir & siphon. I also usually blow off plating corals during the week as I feed since they tend to randomly get a bit of sand on them. Link to comment
