Original 1st post...

I recently relocated from Florida to the Memphis area and had to give up my 65 gallon tank which now resides and thrives in my brother's home. My new apartment lifestyle dictated that scaled back a bit. I knew I wanted to go with a shallow rimless tank. After much consideration I ordered a Deep Blue Professional 30 gallon shallow reef ready tank from my new LFS. The tank arrived last week and the stand should be here sometime in the next week. The build will not really begin for about another month, but the component collection is in full swing...

Nice equipment!

I vote ReefCleaners rock when you're ready to scape ;)

Thanks! I actually already ordered 25lbs of Marcos rock. I used it 4 years ago when I was setting up my 65g and have been real happy with it. I always hear good things about ReefCleaners too, so maybe I will give it a shot in the future.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just got the keys to my apartment this week and the equipment collection is continuing. I hope to have water in the tank in the next few weeks. My LFS here called me today to let me know my stand had come in. I also ordered a custom sump from Advanced Acrylics that should be here next week. The RMS mount for my Radion Pro also came in. I went with a Jebao DC2000 return pump...I have used a DC3000 and DC12000 in the past and have been very happy with them. I am going to be using the Aquamaxx CO-1 skimmer from my decommissioned 65g as well as the Apex from it. I also ordered a bunch of black PVC fittings, spa flex, and tube I am going to use for the plumbing.

I am trying to decide if one MP10 will be enough or if I should start hunting down another. Anyone with a similar tank have any insight on this?

Can't wait to start seeing pictures. I love that setup / dimensions. Some of my favorite tanks uses this very one like Vic's. As far as the MP10, in my opinion one would work great.

Thanks. This is going to be the smallest tank I have had in a long time, so it will probably be a challenge fitting everything I want in it. I have already collected a lot of nice SPS frags that are healing/growing in my brothers 180g...Birds of Paradise, Red Planet, Steve Elias Stag, Joe the Coral, Garf Bonsai, Blue Matrix, etc...

I have always painted the back wall of my tanks blank, but I have never had a rimless tank. I am trying to decide if I should paint the back of this one. Any opinions?

A lot of people are using the privacy window frosting stuff. That gives a really nice soft background that isn't as intrusive as a straight up solid blue or black one.

I was looking for a sump for this build. I considered building one myself, but the dimensions were pretty challenging and no off the shelf tank I could add baffles to would fit like I wanted. I knew ideally I wanted something with an ATO reservoir. I saw a design I liked on Advance Acrylics site, but the dimensions were not quite right. I gave them a call, and explained I wanted something similar to what was on their site but in slightly different dimensions. The nice receptionist put John, the builder, on the phone who let me explain exactly what I wanted. I told him I wanted to take 3" out of the drain/skimmer section, raise the skimmer section water level by an inch, and add a sock holder. Much to my surprise he said he could do it all for me at the same price as their off the shelf unit. Then I asked him if I could pick the colors and he said sure.

10 days later, this absolute work of art showed up at my door...

Thanks guys. I am really trying to keep this build as clean as possible. It is tough with such a small area under the tank to work with. I started the plumbing late last night, but realized I was lacking a fitting I needed on the return side. I ordered it, but it will not be here until Friday. I would really like to have water in it sometime this weekend.

I also picked up some nice frags for the tank during Cherry Corals live sale...Jason Fox Sour Twist, CC Needle in a Haystack, CC Aussie Candlelight, CC Oakland A Paniculata, CC Royale Pocillopora, and a few others.

Made some solid progress today. I got the plumbing done and most of the equipment mounted/installed in the cabinet. I also painted the back of the tank. Tomorrow I would like to get the sand rinsed and in the tank and possibly aquascaping done.

Got the sand and rock rinsed, in the tank, and started working on the aquascaping. This is what I have right now? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Wow that looks great! Impressive equipment list and nice plumbing. Round cove scape is very cool as well,

Thanks! I am really trying not to make any compromises with this tank.

The only thing I would worry about is that the rocks may be too close to the back wall. Detritus could build up back there and I'd imagine catching fish would be a pain if they were small enough to fit back there, haha.
