Calling the JediMaster! Fan control

Ben,

I know you have quite a bit of knowledge on fan control under various circumstances & rather than PM you with some questions, I figured I'd post a new topic for others future benefit.

Working on my new light build for the new tank that's under contstruction & trying to figure the best way to run the fans. I'll be running 4 of Dave's V3's on a Bluefish full with a Coralux 5up board, 4 slots @ 700ma. I saw where you advised to run the whites @ 350ma & I may do that, would just have to get another LDD. All of the components as of now will fit into the light housing with only the power supply wires coming in. I'd like to run the fans off the Bluefish & be able to slow them down if possible. Also I thought that you mentioned somewhere that there was a way to step down the 48v power to supply the fans? I've emailed O2 a couple times over the last week & a half to see what he had, but haven't heard back. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Here are the fans I have...

I talked to Spencer & he suggested the breakout board that they sell, but it's $45 shipped, seems like a lot to control the fans. I could always use my Apex too, but then no speed control & more wires going to fixture. I'd like to be able to slow them a bit just in case they are noisy @ 100%.

Thanks a bunch.

O2 works a lot so he can go awol for short periods. I would buy one of his BF Mini boards and just hook your control wires to it. I could show you where to make the connections, it would be super easy. You would get true 25Khz fan control, which is pretty epic. Smooth as butter.

Only problem is that there are four 12v SCW left in the US. They are SCW08C-12 and are $17 each from Mouser. The next batch of them is currently being manufactured and won't start shipping for several weeks.

Problem I think is, the mini board is pretty decent size correct? Is that the one that'll take like 6 or 8 LDD's? I won't have room for that in my fixture. I need something relatively small, mabe 2"x2"

2x2? Yeah, this one is 15x10cm lol. I don't think you're going to get five LDD into a 2x2 space though.

Online components has some too. 11 week lead time on most of them though.

Nope, factory lead time 11 weeks, still waiting for them to be manufactured ;)

No, I mean I have the full Blufish that's coming out of the case to go in the fixture, as well as the Coralux board which is about 2x4 or 5", 2 fans, then I'd like to minimize a stepdown board/fan controller to add as well. Don't think I need the mini board with the regular Bluefish?

All that O2's board does is provide a fancy mount for the mini, but you could connect any PWM signals to those same pins. :P

I take it you already have the bluefish?

Also, you'll need to bump up the voltage on your power supply to be able to run five LDD. The royal blue channel will be over voltage if you try to run all four of them in series with only 48v input.

Yep. If I provide power to the fans externally, can I use the PWM function from one of the Bluefish channels to control them? They say PWM control on the fan box.

Okay, so scrap the stepdown Driver then. My 48v should be able to handle the 4 V3's, even the blue channel in series?

No biggie on pulling 2 more wires to the fixture for the fans, but can I control them with the Bluefish as I posted above?

Edit: looks like channel one is the big draw, the whites! F! What the hell, didn't even look at the voltage, figures. Had this power supply, it's new. Man, hate to buy a new one.

Fan PWM control is 25khz. The bluefish gives like 500hz, so you will hear a wicked loud whine from the fans.

The white channel has five LEDs and you can run three in series from a 48v supply, the royal blue channel has four LEDs but you're still limited to three in series on 48v input, the LDD output 45v and the LEDs will use just over that even with the Luxeon T's lower than typical voltage if you try to do all four in series.

not all of them. Some of them are in stock in have incremental amounts. A couple they have 200 in stock but they're A types.

Dammit! Ok, let me regroup. If im not a total dumb ass (dont quote me! lol). Then i need 2 more LDD. Two 350ma for white channel, split between two v3's each in series. Two 700ma for blue channel, split between two V3's each in series. Then one 700ma for each of the other 2 channels in series. For a total of 6 LDD's to run off the 48v meanwell. Am i getting this correct? And if so, can i split the bluefish control between 2 LDD's to control 1 channel, ie. Whites?

The royal blue channel of a single array uses 11.2v at 700mA. Four in series is 44.8v, which is too close for comfort to the 45v maximum output of the LDD-700H when using a 48v power supply. The white channel uses 13.6v at 350mA, three in series is 40.8v, four is 54.4v, so yes, you'll want to split each of those channels to two and two.

You could run 10,000 LDD from a single power supply so long as the LEDs attached don't exceed the wattage of the power supply.

Each channel of the full Bluefish gives ~20mA maximum, this means you can run approximately 357x LDD on each channel, for a total of 2,142x per Bluefish. ;)

SWEEET. I think i got it. Now, Mr Kovacs emailed me back about the mini board (which i dont need now that the suze is prohibitive.) but i thought u mentioned somewhere that he makes a board for just the stepdown driver for the fans.Am i correct & would this just hold the 1 SCW (or whatever) to pull down the 48v to 12v & connect to my bluefush for control?

He does, yes. I think I actually might have one of those converters, but I'm not sure where it would be. Ask O2 :)

Ben,how do I get my veridian crystal cut properly to limit my sabers reach? :P

Small hiccup. Received my SCW adapter from O2 to control my fans with the Bluefish and didn't realize that it plugs into a LDD slot, then the SCW into that. This currently makes it too high to fit in my light housing. Brainstorming a solution, but may just have to use it seperate of the LDD board & solder some wires directly to the adapter?!?!

Ben, I should only need 4 connections to the SCW correct, power in "+" & "-", fan out "+" & "-" ? What are the "NC" pins? And why are there 2 pins each for power in "+" & "-" ? I should only need to connect one each?

Thanks buddy
