DurocShark
...but I ordered a 17.1 Mr Aqua tank. Now what the heck am I going to put in it? Do I go nuts and drill it and add a sump and go with another reef? Do I just make it a frag tank? Or do I go back to my roots and go planted? I'm kinda liking the planted idea, but it's too small for angels or discus. I probably shouldn't have bought it. lol But I do need something for my dresser in my bedroom now that SharkWife and I have separate bedrooms (hooray for snoring!) Link to comment
patback
The 17.1 is tall, right? Either mantis reef tank or flamboyant cuttlefish reef. Link to comment
DurocShark
Oh, crap. A cuttlefish! I can see it now. Tank crash because I snored too loud and scared the thing and it inked the tank. Ooohhh... Dwarf lionfish or frogfish! Fowlr with some carnivores!Gah. Why do I do this to myself? Link to comment
Matteo
A Frog fish would be really cool, you could do a macro algae tank with scooter blennies and dragonets? A rock anemone garden, or do the shallow look, have really white fine sand, few peices of rock and have mangroves sticking out and put like 5 chromis to school. Sea horse tank, if you really really really wanted to do something crazy you could get a dwarf octopus Link to comment
DurocShark
Yeah, that's what I need... an escape artist cruising my house for SharkWife to step on. I'm kinda leaning toward a planted tank. I miss my lace plants. Link to comment
DurocShark
OK. Saltwater it is. Now... Corals or FOWLR? I'm going to drill the tank and try making a low profile planar style overflow (pane of acrylic across the back with a 1-2mm gap for water to flow down to a bulkhead in the bottom.) I've seen them around and love the idea. FIgured it's a good time to try it out. Link to comment

Planar overflows (I saw one or two at the LFS) are really cool and completely silent, but the required precision is pretty crazy. One or two degree slant and the water flow over the panel will be pretty weird Link to comment
DurocShark
Of course, that now means I have to build a stand and come up with a sump. Sigh... Start FOWLR with Reef Ready lighting, add corals over time?Planar overflows (I saw one or two at the LFS) are really cool and completely silent, but the required precision is pretty crazy. One or two degree slant and the water flow over the panel will be pretty weird Heh, I can see that. As long as the water line is all the way across by the time it gets to the bottom, I wouldn't be worried about it. But that still means pretty tight tolerances both in the overflow build AND in leveling the tank. Link to comment
PicoSavvy
Go nuts and drill it and add a sump. Sump are always good the more water volume the better, more stability. Heck I even sump my pico. Link to comment
Hammerstone
You could try breeding and raising the fry of something? Link to comment
PicoSavvy
If you do breed something, try breeding Banggai Cardinals, they are pretty easy to breed and are beautiful fish Link to comment
Matteo
If you do fish only you should do a frog fish. And the sump will carry all your feeder shrimp Link to comment
PicoSavvy
Hey Matteo where can you buy does frog fish? Link to comment
Matteo
You can on divers den and saltwaterfish.com I'm sure there are other sites who sell as well. Can get spendy though Link to comment
RK_tek
I haven't seen a planar overflow. Know of any pics online? I tried searching but came up with the usual types. They sound pretty interesting to me. And do planted. Canister and some lily pipes. Call it a day. Link to comment

DurocShark
When I get back from TechMentor I'll start building a stand. I think I'm going with reef, but with interesting fish. Link to comment
Steensj2004
Could do some seahorses and pipe fish? I really love the idea of a little frogfish, been considering a fluv spec V for a little angler the last few weeks... Link to comment
DurocShark
I don't want a fish that requires constant care. I'm starting to travel more, and need something easier. In fact, I'm posting this from Seattle. I'm in WA for TechMentor. I like the idea of a frogfish. I can keep live food in the fuge for him until I train him on something else. And I can train my daughter to feed it twice a week while I'm traveling. Maintaining a supply of live food for the horses would be too much. Link to comment
Neebles
I'm telling you right now from experience, having a fish that only eats live is a pain in the ass, especially if you can't train it onto frozen, which isn't a guarantee. one plus is they only need to eat a couple times a week so it's nice for traveling. I have a leaf scorpion right now and while it's an awesome fish, with a neat personality, if I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have gotten him. Link to comment
hinnenkm
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this. I've got the Mr. Aqua 17 gallon and love it! It's not super large, but you'd be surprised at what you can fit into it. Hope it all goes smoothly ? Link to comment
