jamescstein
So you know petco/petsmart $ a gallon sales.... I am thinking about setting up a shallow RFA garden. Would I be an idiot to pick up a 40B and chop the top to make it shorter? I've cut glass before so that shouldn't be an issue. My thoughts were, de-rim it, chop it and then probably replace the rim. I don't care about rimless, more about strength. Am I destined to fail? Link to comment

Why not just buy some glass to size and make yourself a tank? Link to comment
jamescstein
Yeah.... No way you can take off the rim without destroying the plastic. Why not just buy some glass to size and make yourself a tank? Not sure about that. My daughter is re-habing a 35 gallon and the bottom rim actually fell off. Its a used tank and the previous owner had actually gorilla glued it back on at some point. It would suck I am sure but I could probably get the rim off. Of course how long would it take to get it off in one piece.. that is another question. That is likely what I will do, and use glass a little thicker than what those tanks come with. I was mostly thinking of cost. We built a largish 70 gallon sump/refuge for my wifes 125 and the glass was a bit spendy. Link to comment

VW_TDI_02
Why not just not fill the tank as much and have the overflow holes drilled further down in the tank. Link to comment

Acielot
The 30 breeder is the same LxW but shorter than the 40b . If that is still to tall just get one built custom. Link to comment

Doh.. didn't even think about the 30B.. That 12" be perfect, as for custom, If I went that route I'd get glass cut and make my own. Link to comment
Steensj2004
Deep blue 34 gallon rimless. 180.00 brand new, same footprint as a 40 breeder only 12" high..... Link to comment
jedimasterben
Can you get a 30B at $/G? No, only 10, 20, 29, 40, and 55 are valid options. Link to comment

SomethingIsFishy
Not sure if you're still considering this... I've done a chop on a 29: I went rimless, removing the bottom trim in one piece is easy, removing the top trim in one piece is impossible, at least for me... The tank has to come completely apart, which can be a challenge. I believe that the sides/front/back are not tempered on a 40b, so it should be possible. Link to comment
Muraki
The Aqueon 40B, I was not able to get either the top or bottom rim off without it being in pieces. I took one 100% apart to use the glass as baffles in my sump. Razor blade was my main tool though, Except for when I took the reciprocating saw to the bottom rim because I got impatient with the razor blade. Maybe you have better tools then I did for the job though. Link to comment
Gooburz
You can de-rim the tank and get the top piece off in one piece, it just takes TIME and patience. You'll need a razor blade to cut along the inside and outside of the rim to free it up but it can be done. When I say time it might take you a hour or 2 but it can be done. Then you can cut down the tank to whatever height you want and put the top back on. The other option you can do is cut the top piece at all 4 corners and take them off 1 at a time and then put them back on and re-glue it back on the top and you won't even notice it. People are so impatient now a days and if it can't be done right then and there simply then it must not be able to get done. Link to comment
