Help me with my corals :(

Okay so everything seems to be okay, I'm pretty sure everything's just pissed off as of right now here's what i'm talking about.

11224620_10206013781281885_4628620308612This is a zoa polyp (I think, still new) but I've had it since I purchased the tank. I moved it here around the middle of last week and it's been like this ever since :/

This kenya tree has been in the tank since I got it as well. it used to be happy and everything but it's been like this since I moved it around to get it away from the heavy water current. Is it too close to the mushroom?

11220117_10206013781481890_5211887078309This guy has grown well he used to be about quarter sized. Anyway he used to open up a lot more. Is there something I should do to separate him or should I just leave him the way he is?

11061771_10206013781761897_8309637188483

I don't really know what this guy is. I got him a couple days ago at my LFS. Can someone help me identify him and maybe tell me whats going on with the darker appendages? They were like that when I got him.

11666289_10206013781801898_2773763587305I'm really concerned about this mushroom. I don't know if I hurt it when I was placing it or what. Help? Anyone?

If needed here's my full tank set up

Already have. Nitrates are minimal 0-5ppm. Nitrites are non existent. Ph is neutral. Temps at 77 on average.

I can't see any of your pictures. Also those aren't the only parameters. You need Alk and Calc levels as well. Too high or too low of Alk can cause issues. It sounds like you have recently moved your corals too. That will cause them to be upset for awhile. Just keep things constant and don't move them around.

Can you post a full tank shot? How long has this aquarium been running? Have you tested for calcium and alkalinity? What kind of lighting do you have?

This the GSP that I'm wondering about if I need to do anything with it or move it?

Alkalinity level?

Lighting?

Looks like a newish tank. I bet either the calcium or alk is off some. doing a water change can always help. What kidn of light are you running?

stock pump and stock light? what does this exactly mean? and the calcium is going to matter if you want the birdsnest to live :)

I bought the tank as a setup from my LFS. It has an elive aqua duo filter and white LED's attached to the bottom of the filter. Not exactly sure of their wattage or anything like that.

I have a blue solar flare 3 watt over the top of the tank that I run with the string of LED's attached to underside of the aquaduo filter.

I'm a college student, but I have a full-time job to pay the bills and fuel my new hobby ;)

Recommendations would be fantastic, but I don't have a lot of excess funds.

AI PRIME imo best light you and it's $200. Full wireless control and programming plus nice power

The 3w solar flare is the problem- that won't grow anything well/ especially SPS.

Is there a specific wattage I need? I was afraid I was giving the stuff too much light because the Kenya trees are sorta white around their bases.

I say put a PAR38 bulb on the tank and it would do great! i would shoot for 15-25 watts

Here's an update to everyone interested! I went to several of the LFS in my area and my favorite one had exactly what I was looking for! I got myself a nice 15 W lamp that delivers a full spectrum of daylight as well as lunar light!

It was a pretty great find plus my tank looks great and everything looks a lot happier already!

I would still take a sample to your LFS and get them to test everything. Do you have a power head or other pump in the tank or is it just the filter for flow? That birdsnest is gonna need something.

Link to comment

I actually did that today when I bought the lamp because I called and asked questions about it and they suggested bringing water in. They told me everything was great and that continuing to do weekly water changes would be sufficient for coral growth etc. They said everything looked good and I showed them photos of my tank setup and they told me not to worry! They had a similar setup in their shop that had SPS in it that looked great with just a stock filter that they showed me to just to better explain what they were talking about,

Link to comment

They didn't tell you the numbers from the tests? IMO that birdsnest might survive in there but I doubt it will thrive. Personally I don't like taking advice from many fish stores, there are exceptions though, they are money driven. Asking questions here you will straight forward answers.

Link to comment

Yes actually they did. Calcium was 430ppm. They told me I had no reason to worry and that as long as I kept my current practices constant everything would be okay. They're pretty straight with me in there. There's one store in Knoxville here that has a terrible reputation for what you're talking about and I ignore it.

That's good. I wouldn't buy a snail from our only store in town. They normally don't have anything anyways though. Not sure how they even stay open.

I appreciate all the help! I'm still new to all of this! But I've gotta say just from the time I got home with my new light (3pm ish) to now everything looks about 5x better.

Even the brown edges that the SPS had are starting to disappear as well.

  • 3 months later...

Things have gotten A lot better since July. Everything's started to grow really well. Around August though i had a bad case of cyano, which I found was me just leaving my light on too long. I've gotten a timer since and Everything's been doing really well!
