calcium reactor

I am one of the few people who will tell you to go for it. But that is because I love calcium reactors because I feel they supply calcium and trace elements in a more natural way than additives. They are also cheaper. Most people will tell you that it will run your tanks ph down to low but if set up properly it should not. They key here is to have a ph probe controlling your co2 regulator. You don't want any excess co2 going back into the tank. I have had one on a small a tank as a 15 gallon with zero ph problems. What size tank do you have?

Also I really like these calcium reactors:

Do you have a ATO? Why not just add kalk to you top off water?

I have a 16-liter, but I would like to make a hot allargarmi from about 100 liters.

Hello

Wait. You want to put a calcium reactor on a 16 liter tank?

Ato is a device that put back the water you lose in your tank from evaporation. (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/images/Categoryimages/alternate/a-_22977_30503P_02.jpg)

Now I am a fan of calcium reactor. At one stage I was actually planning on building one for a pico tank. But that one that you have list. I wouldn't trust it I would go with a AquaMaxx star s-nano .

Here is my original thread that talks about a pico calcium reactor and also gives you some ideas on how to deal with ph drop of calcium reactor (http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/348474-cr-reactor/)

Hey Bingo1213 what model reactor did you have running on that 15 gallon tank

Mine is a MRC that I got super cheap used. It is rated for a 250 gallon tank so its pretty big. It is no longer on that tank though. I now have it on my 85 but it was on the 15 for about a year with no ph problems what so ever. It stayed right around 8.2.

Really no ph problem. Wow man that sounds crazy a 250 gallon rated reactor on a 15 gallon nano. Can I ask what c02 regulator you use and did you have it controlled by a ph probe

Sorry for the delay I was out of town and it is an azoo regulator and yes It was always and still is on a ph probe. I run the reactor ph between 6.59 and 6.52. And obliviously I am not having ph issues now either lol.

Topping of via an ATO is a very inefficient way to do this, you miss out replacing trace elements, you also have the possibility of flooding your tank in the case of anything happens and your ATO is stuck on.

Wouldn't you replace trace elements when you do a water change, such as Mg and Stronium? And unless he has a super high Ca and Alk demand I don't see the reason for a reactor. Just my opinion and I am not super familiar with them.

If it was that inefficient then there wouldn't be thousands of people doing it this way. . Also the cost difference between a few hundred for $ for a ca reactor setup vs a few $ for a bag of Ms Wages pickling lime( if you have a ato) would be enough for me to want to dose trace elements manually.

My Tunze Osmolator will not pump enough water to flood my tank before the computer kicks the pump out if the float gets stuck. It's something like 3/4 gallon and I have plenty of room for that much extra in my tank.

With a calcium reactor you could eventually never have to do a water change. You're relacing at an extremely constant rate. Doing a water change on a 100 gallon+ system especially when you get into 150-200 gallons gets expensive doing a 20% water change. On kalk you also have to worry about build up on pumps.

The cons on a calcium reactor is the initial investment of quality equipment. With a high quality regulator costing s couple hundred itself.

Plus one to this! I vodka dose my 85 and have the calcium reactor, a few other media reactors, a sterilizer and a good fuge and my last water change was 13 months ago. My tank looks amazing too. All the clams and sps are happy and to keep the lps and softies happy i feed lots! Also I have it very over stocked. My nitrates and phosphates always remain at 0.
