What % for Nanobox over Zoa's?

Hey all,

I would love to know what % you guys are running your blues and whites using you Nanobox over your tank with Zoas. I have a Zoa garden and I am trying to determine the best intensity to satisfy as many of them as I can. I know Zoas vary and sometime will lose color, close up, tuck their skirts or even melt away due to light.

If you have a tank and you use a Nanobox and your Zoas are loving life please chime in.

Thank you!

Need to know the tank dimensions first. Specifically, how deep the zoas are. As with any fixture, I would start at 10% and then go up from there. If you start to bleach some corals then knock it back down.

Its 16" x 16" and 9" in deep. Zoa's on rockscape ranging from 2" off the sand to 5" under the water line. The Duo is currently 4" above the water line. I will be raising that once I get my longer gooseneck.

I run at 60% most of the day.

Wow, I assumed you had a regular mini tide since it was such a small tank. I would just start them off at 10% and then slowly start bumping it up. I would imagine that around 35% is the max you'll want for such a shallow tank. Even that could easily be too much. The important thing is to slowly raise it and see how they do.

I have a Tide on the fragt tank below. I wanted full coverage since the rock work creates shaded spots with the Tide.

I have had the tank running with certain colonies thriving for months now. I do think I have been running it too high (at 1 point 100%) so I have been taking it down. The reason I did that was I noticed the skirts on some of the frags were tucked. Seems to get better as I lower the light.

Thanks for the input.

I have a small retro on mine, it's 15"x12"x16" and I run mine at 65% blues and 15% whites at peak. Do you have the duo on a controller?

I have a full Apex setup and the Duo (and the Tide on my frag tank) are both controlled by a Bluefish mini. I have dimmed both way down since posting this thread to 35% max throughout the day. Personally, I feel that is not enough, but I am having a hard time determining why certain of my frags will tuck in their skirts (while the color and face of the polpy stay open).

Skirts tucked means irritation, maybe flow related. Def start low and turn the LEDs up. If you see longer stalks on the zoas then they are reaching for the light and you can continue to bump it up and they'll lay back down. It's not as easy to recover from burning them as it is from lack of light.

I had an issue with my Sexy Shrimp eating the skirts. Also, my Tailspot Blenny perches near some of them causing them to fully close (not just the skirt).

I thought that the Sexies were the main culprit, but I believe the skirts also tuck in when getting too much light. This occurs prior to them burning. I came to this conclusion through extensive research and timing of when I increased my intensity to 100% and within weeks the skirts were tucked on 5 or 6 frags. On other, they are doing great. I moved those down to the sand in the shade under rock and the skirts are starting to show again so it is not like the Sexy at them all off. I think it was a combo of both.

As for flow, do you think that it would be too much flow or too little? I thought the former so my MP10QD never runs more than 10% during the day.

I have 80+ Zoa frags in this tank and a lot of $$$ invested. Every day I am watching and trying to provide the perfect environment. It kills me to have this happen to these frags, but such is life with a Zoa addiction!

I also 2 part dose the tank and feed a combo of Reef Roids, Reef Chili and Acropower every other day.

Thanks for the input! I am definitely going to keep the lights down lower than I think and very slowly increase them once I see the damaged frags reaching for more light. Hopefully the other frags who seemingly enjoyed the very high light will be ok with that.

A good starting place for this tank is ~ 60% blue and 20-30% white depending on the color you like.

I would also check the flow. I have noticed that SOME like heavier flow while other like low flow. That is the hard part when you have 80 different types!

Regardless I hope you get it sorted out. This is a Nano Box tank I would love to share. :)

Just put the DUO in the mail! Can't wait for the longer gooseneck. One of the issues I think I am having is that the fixture was too close to the water level due to me stretching it out to hit the center of the tank. Not only will it heat the tank less, but the intensity will not be as much certain spots with the longer gooseneck.

I moved the Tide up to the DT from the frag tank so that is dark now. Might need to move the 15 or so frags from there to the sandbed of the DT.

In a few months I will have a nice camera and most of these frags should be mini colonies. I cannot wait to share then!

Yep my Rastas love being in the heavy flow. Galaxy's not so much.
