I'm setting up the scape for a 12L build and thought about putting some egg crate under the sand in some choice areas so I can then settle some plugs into the sand securely. I'm thinking of adding a pistol/goby pair and I know pistols will move around anything I put on the sand, but I thought if the areas I want to put plugs had egg crate within the sand, secured to the bottom of the tank, the pistol wouldn't move them (as easily). Here's my question: if I use egg crate under the sand in parts of the tank, will this leach silicates longterm into the water? Is it bad to use things like egg crate to build a scape? Link to comment
Exodus Posted July 11, 2015 Share Posted July 11, 2015 Plenty of people use pieces of eggcrate under liverock to keep it a bit more sturdy. As far as a pistol Shrimp moving things around that would be the least of my wories. I would be more concerned with sand moving around as it does and uncovering the eggcrate creating an eyesore. Silicates would also be of little worry in comparison to detrius buildup inside the small holes of the eggrate where it might discourage sand sifters and other CUC members from going after it, but regardless if these are small enough pieces and a good layer of sand over them I wouldn't be too worried. GOOD info. Thanks Exodus! Yeah, I'm only going to do a couple 6"x 2" rectangles. But you make some good points about detritus and also eyesores with egg crate showing. While repositioning frags that move is a pita, I'm thinking constantly having to cover up exposed areas of egg crate will be almost the same thing Link to comment
