When to add more filtration?

Currently, I am running a filter sock and a skimmer in my sump. Nothing else other than my rock in my display. I was curious as to when most people add more filtration like macro algae (chaeto and what not), reactors, and/or products like chemipure. Do most people wait until they have issues with water quality (nitrates, phostphates, water clarity, etc.)? Or do you add these things as a preemptive measure?

It's better to be proactive than reactive, but it's also good to not fix something that isn't broken.

Hope that clears it up... lol.

HA! Yeah, I figured. Clear as mud. Anyway, I would be interested in running carbon/GFO and/or growing some chaeto for nutrient export, but with my tank just now finishing up its cycle, I keep asking myself why and when?

I haven't been doing this that long, but from my experience and reading the big question is "what do you intend to do with the tank?". Nutrient export is only necessary if you have nutrient import (feeding).

Are you planning on a heavy bioload and SPS coral or no fish and zoas only?

Those are the kinds of things you need to decide before you plan an approach to nutrient export.

I will definitely be going with a mixed reef. I have time to decide if I will need any of that stuff. I was thinking about just tossing a bag of chemi pure blue into my filter sock for now since I basically have nothing in my tank while I slowly add livestock. Not the most effective choice though.

Are you testing your water at all? No real point in putting CPB, or anything else, in if you don't have anything for it to remove. Any fish/inverts in there yet? Are you feeding?

I have a couple of fire fish in there. No inverts. I was thinking I could run some carbon to clear up my water a little. No diatoms or anything crazy yet. Like I said, I have time. I do test my water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, and PH. Nothing else yet.

I've never run a filter sock, but I would expect it to clear up your water of almost anything visible. Is there stuff in your water? I would suggest filter floss, but my understanding of the sock is that it serves the same purpose +.

Same purpose, but a sock is expensive and a pain to clean!

Yeah, same exact purpose. And yes... a pain to clean for sure! Socks aren't expensive in the long run if you clean them and reuse them though. It is in a sump, so no media baskets or anything like you AIO guys have to keep floss from floating off/away from my drain pipe.
