Upgrading/moving tank - how to steps

I got lots of great help on my earlier thread - thank you! I have a 7 gallon not great tank. I am planning on upgrading to a Nuvo 10 and feel good about my equipment choices. What I am not sure about is EXACTLY how I go about the actual physical move.

I have read a lot about moving/relocating a tank, but less about moving to a new tank. I'm going from a wide/flat tank (roughly 17" wide, 7" deep, 15" tall) to a cube, so I need to redo my aquascape - handling the rock is my biggest question.

Do I set up and cycle the new tank and just more the stock (when everything is cycled)? Do I just incorporate some of my current rock into the new scape and move my water (like I'm moving to a new house)? Do I do something else?

Thank you!

My experience over the years has been this:

You should be fine just transfering stuff straight over, but just the same it wouldn't hurt to have a water change ready to go if need be. Be sure to use as much of the old water as you possibly can.

One thing to keep in mind is the substrate. In some cases depending on type, depth and microfauna populations, anoxic regions can form with all kinds of nasty stuff in it that can cause problems if disturbed.

But a healthy live sand bed without too much detritus in it can easily be transferred without incident.

I would prefer to do a new substrate - I don't love what I have now (why did I pick black?!?!)

If I'm not planning on keeping the current rocks long term, should I still move them to get things going? Or is the water enough? (my frags are all small enough that they can be moved my moving plugs)

Definitley get rid of the old substrate, depending on the amount of liverock in your current system being transfered will depend on severity of your cycle. Like it or not you will get a cycle in the new tank, the more beneficial bacteria you introduce the less impact the cycle will have. IMO if your rocks have corals on them I would cycle it before you drop everything in to be 100% Safe since it an option.

I upgraded my tank which is the same concept. While putting livestock in a temporary bucket (Or three), poured new sand into the other tank, added water (onto a plate to avoid cloudiness), and moved the live rock over.

I had a few days of slight diatoms from the new sand, but after a week or two the fish and corals looked better than ever

They actually benefited from the addition of new water! Haha I suck at water changes
