fish12345
I will be drilling a 29 gallon tank for a herbie overflow. the overflow I have is roughly 5.5 inches square. The holes I am drilling are 1.375". If I cant fit these side by side, can they be offset vertically? Or should I just order a larger overflow? http://imgur.com/HXlj9q4 Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
Are you running the smallest overflow box from BRS? Link to comment

Each bulkhead ends up being about 2" in diameter. Off setting them vertically as you mentioned may be the best bet. Having them too close together increases the risk of cracking the tank while drilling it. I'm using a really small overflow box and running a herbie style drain. The edges of the bulkheads are about 3/4" apart. Link to comment

One will have an elbow facing down and the other have the elbow facing up. Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
That would work. With the full siphon drain, as long as it's below the other drain, you don't even need the elbow. I would just make sure to put a snail guard on it. I didn't on mine and it's causing problems if any snails get in there. Also, try not to get the bulkhead too close to the edges of the glass panels either. Link to comment

Small world. Link to comment

If you haven't already ordered the drill bit or don't have one, I have a 35mm drill bit (used for 3/4" ABS bulkheads) you can borrow. I also have a drill press attachment that I used when I drilled my tank. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/diamond-coated-glass-drill-bits.html http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JCIMEA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00 Link to comment

I might take you up on the drill press attachment though. I will let you know! Link to comment

I was a bit nervous doing it and that was the first time drilling through glass. I was surprised at how long it actually took to make the holes and also how incredibly loud it was. I was doing this indoors in my kitchen and I had to stop after a few seconds and get some ear plugs from my gun case. Link to comment

I ended up doing one hole on the side and one hole on the back. Everything went well, but you were absolutely right about the noise. I had my ear pro on but it was still loud as heck. The holes were a little jagged on the edges but no cracks to speak of. Link to comment
