Top Fin premixed saltwater

Have any of you try top Fin premixed saltwater ? I bought a 2.3 gallon bucket to try it out. I just want see if anyone has had any bad experience with it or with top Fin salt in general. I would have bought salt mix and mixed it my self with rodi water but I don't have a reverse osmosis system to make rodi water and don't know where to buy it locally

I would never pay $15 for 2.3 gallons of filtered NSW. The most expensive salt mix you can get is half that price including buying RODI water. If you use it make sure to check it before use. Salinity especially.

What are you using for top off water? You should be using RODI (0 TDS) water for top off so it would not be that big a deal to pick up some more and mix your own.

How big a tank do you have?

I don't have a system yet bet well be setting one up soon in a month or less. I am going to be using it to cure some curing dry rock

Go for it, I used it a couple times, in fact I used it when I set up my tank the second time because it was on a whim, I've had great success with it. I don't use it anymore I use Aqua Vitro Salinity but in a quick pinch I would do it again.

Thank you 12_egg_Omelette for reassuring me that top fin saltwater is safe to use I hate to have an algae problem or have a tank crash because of bad saltwater.

No problem the worst thing you can do it use tap water. Petco also has filtered sea water and it's cheaper.

DINGDINGDING GENERALIZATION!!!

Depends on the tap. I get great water from the tap that I can just mix and pour- from a well :)

You must realize you are in the very small minority when it comes to being able to use tap water. For most all the rest of the world, tap water is not a good idea for all sorts of reasons and should not be recommended.

My well water is very low in TDS (averages 17PPM) and I use an RODI for all my tank water. Although I have such good well water, I don't trust it. My RODI filters get nasty looking and I am pumping fairly pure 17PPM water through it. I would not want whatever all that is collecting in my filters to go into my tank.

Curious, have you tested your tap water for nitrates, phosphate, copper, TDS?

Also, remember that as your tank water evaporates any TDS levels will increase over time and may become a problem at some point (suden algae bloom). So whatever accounts for that 17 PPM in my tap water would be concentrated over time in my tank as water evaporates. No thanks. Not to mention well water is dependent on the quirks of nature and man. What happens if there is flooding, drought, or the other well owner installs a new copper valve at the pump house?

Only have tested Ca (~490), Mg (~1500), Alk (~10). I sometimes use the tap water for the ATO to supplement my dosing :)

I should clarify- this is NOT water straight up from the well. It is put through a RO filter for our drinking purposes.

Harry - So you don't use true tap water. I think the reason we say don't use tap is for the reasons CJJon stated, if you don't have the resources to make water chances are you're not using a test kit that can test for all the other properties of tap water.

My local reef club also posts the water quality report for local reefers in College Station, TX which can be found here.

Whoops yeah totally didn't think of it like that. Yeah its not from the well directly, but from the filter under the sink. You are most likely right in this case

It's ok. I think I over filter. I use RNA/DNA free water.

Wells also pose a threat for unwanted antigens that may get into the water source through the ground, city water would be best as through the primary, secondary, and tertiary process of purifying the water they receive phosphates and nitrates are reduced to the bare minimum using bacteria and chemical binding agents

No, Zero TDS water through a filter RO/DI.

You're shooting for 0 TDS, if you get zero TDS it's good enough for our usage.

There is no such thing as zero TDS city water.

No I'm saying it's better than using well water if you decide to use tap, I'm all for RODI trust me lol

Even if I called up my city hall and asked them what the quality of the tap water was I still would not trust them, mainly because in my opinion the water used is one, if not the single most important Part in a reef system it is what keep everything from death and leaving it to some else to tell you if it safe or not is not smart

If you live in a town like me with no local fish store and don't want to mix stuff this is a great option. Especially if you're just starting off.

I live in homestead Florida the most saltwater stuff I see around is sold by petco so not alot of options.
