Alk question

So after much research over the past year I was under the impression that as long as your alk was above 7 and stayed stable you were fine, but now I'm reading a lot about negative affects of having too high of Alk, people seem to recommend about 9 or so. Well I've recently started using coral pro salt and the Alk levels are about a 12, is this going to be a problem? Is this considered too high?

Coral Pro Salt has always run really high Alk. Again, as long as it's stable and you aren't adding anything to raise it even more (2 part, kalk, etc.) then I wouldn't worry about it. Like you said, stability is key.

The reason that Coral Pro salt has an elevated alkalinity is that Red Sea has documented better coral growth under these conditions. The effect is, however, limited to growth, and as such cannot really indicate anything about overall coral health. Their regular Sea Salt does not have this high alkalinity and, by their own words, is supposed to give better colours.

I personally would not be willing to sacrifice coral health nor colours for better growth, especially not in a nano that will fill up quickly enough as it is, but that is all up to one's own individual taste, I guess :)
