Saltnewbie12
I am going to be getting my oair of clowns in a couple of weeks. I would like then to host an anemone and stay on the smaller side, since my tank is a 29 hex. I have heard the ocellaris clowns are a good choice. If i got a pair, would i beable to get a black one and an orange one? Or do they do better being the same color? Link to comment
PDR
The black and orange will be fine together. Link to comment
Neebles
Try to let your tank mature for a few months before adding an anemone to the system. Research what types your clowns will live in. Don't get a BTA and expect it to host clowns right away or ever for that matter. It's my personal pet peeve but clowns don't host anemones. Anemones host clowns. Link to comment
Havok_9
Haha I remember asking the same question at the store when I made my first clown purchase. But yes, the two different colors will be fine together. Neebles is right, give your tank a chance to mature and give yourself some time to learn. Make a mistake with an anemone and it will cost you your entire livestock. 29 gallons is a good size for a starter tank for a pair of clowns. Get some easy coral and work your way up to the anemone- some clowns will host almost anything. Mine hosted a monti cap for nearly a yr before it even noticed my anemone. You could also consider getting a torch or frogspawn, mine have hosted those very willingly before too. Link to comment
Hammerstone
I've had my Female Occelaris clown for about a year. If I got a little black clown, assuming being small that it would be a male, and since she's been in the tank and has her territory marked out, would it be a slaughter? I have heard its a crap shoot. I don't want to upset the balance in my tank or have anyone get hurt. I'm just always wishing we got two from the start :-( also mine is hosted by a patch of hair algae lol. Link to comment
Hig789
As said above clowns will host in about anything you don't have to have a anemone unless you really just want one. The maroon I had hosted in my short tenticaled frogspawn. IME they add a huge bio load to the tank if they are fed properly. Link to comment

I've introduced three different male black clowns to my female with zero incident (the males died, tank crash, moving etc) I make sure to pick a very small fish out when my LFS gets a large crop in, ten or so juvies, to ensure its small and definitely male. Once the female lays down the law and established dominance, they were cool. Link to comment
Balix
It's a gamble getting a black and orange one together. More risky if you already have one in the tank or if the LFS store kept them separate by color. But then nothing also may happen and they just get along fine. You could get one of those knitted box where you can keep one of them separate but they can see each other in the tank. Link to comment
Hammerstone
My husband is so anti getting another clown. He says my current large female whose been in my tank for a year will kill it. He says everything he has read says that. I just want to try. I would like her to have a mate. BTW when I ripped out my clowns hair algae, now she's in love being hosted by the powerhead lol.
