Kole Tang died out of nowhere today!? Any ideas?

I don't understand at all...I've had him for 2 years now. Fat and happy. This morning he was totally fine.

I cleaned out my sump this morning along with the skimmer and did a 50% water change. Salinity and temperature were fine...
I can't imagine that cleaning my sump out could have caused this? All my corals and the 2 clowns + royal gramma are totally fine!

Does that white section look like he could have had an infection or something? I have never noticed that while looking at him.

side note -- 1 month ago I lost a yellow tang while I went on vacation (but she was deathly skinny for months and had an white spots infection and when I came home it looked like she didn't eat anything and starved to death which she was on the edge of anyway...this tang has been fat and happy always swimming and eating)

Kinda upset...he was my favorite fish... clear.png

Any ideas?

Might very well have to do with whatever your previous tang had, just internal, nothing to view so maybe it didnt' take but the change to shock him if he was already compromised internally.

Any recent additions? I don't think cleaning out the sump or doing a water change would cause issues to one fish only - if it caused any issues you would see it with all your fish most likely.

I would agree that it could easily have been something internal. Did you notice any white stringy poop? That's a sure sign of an internal parasite of some sort. Any other symptoms? Sometimes it's tough because if we've had a fish for a long time we assume it's fine so we don't look very carefully for things that might be wrong or out of the ordinary. Not saying you don't observe your tank or anything, but when it's been running fine there's usually not a reason to start closely observing individual fish.

It is frustrating when a long-time fish suddenly dies though.

Well I will be breaking down the tank in 6 to 9 months with a house move so I will focus on growing my corals and restock once I move and set everything back up!

With 2 clowns and a royal gramma I can use a 20L as a temporary tank for a month or two til I can move the tank create a brand new aquascape and let it cycle...probably wouldn't have been possible with the tang I would have had to use a 40b and build a stand due to weight. A 20l should be fine for a sturdy table.

Age maybe, fish get old. Heck maybe that fish had a heart attack or stroke, fish might have had a genetic disorder, fish can often suffer the same diseases as us. It dosent have to be an infection, parasite, or poisoning.

My point exactly, could be a natural cause
