I'll be getting salt water from my lfs along with distilled water for top ups. Quick question is salt water used for water changes or is that distilled/RODI water?

Any sort of equipment, media etc.. I'm missing?

Thanks.

Ugh can you just post the name of what you're getting? No way I can check out all of those links lol

Okay, I'll update my first post with names prior to links.

This all looks great and as a Fusion owner, I know you will love it.

I do have to admit though, I don't know what Seachem Matrix is. All I use is Chemi-Pure Elite and Purigen.

I'd say you could just use chemipure and get away with not using phosguard. And matrix is going to be like using live rock for biofiltration, I would skip that and make sure you have good live rock and enough of it for your tank,

Yes and puriGen is also a great media

If you aren't sacrificing room in the filtration I say using matrix won't hurt at all. You just have to make sure it stays unclogged. That could also allow you to use less rock in an already small display.

There's a thousand ways to do it right, but you're equipment list is on point. Good luck!

Forget the Martix bio media if running live rock. Also I would get the API test kit with ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. No real need to spend the extra bucks for Salifert at this stage. Salifert Mg, Ca, and Alk are great though. Oh, and I almost never test pH and you won't need to test much either. I've never used the pH tests in any of the API kits I have.

Use RODI water for your top-off (due to evaporation) and RODI water to mix saltwater for your water changes.

The only other thing may be an algae scraper.

Thanks guys, I will now be excluding the Seachem Matrix as per most of your opinions.

I just had a word with a guy from that website I'll be getting the stuff from and he said to get the RowaCarbon and to forget about the Chemi Pure Blue (that could be because they don't stock the CPB), thoughts? Should I just get both or is that overkill as both are carbon based things? (sorry for sounding like a complete idiot but I am a new to this).

Also I've now replaced the different Salifert test kits with the API Master Kit.

Also is there an ideal order to place the media in the baskets?

Maybe go with BRS GFO and ROX carbon in separate bags. Carbon does not last as long as GFO and should be replaced more often. Having them mixed together makes that kinda difficult to do. The BRS stuff is top quality and cost effective.

Filter floss before any media. The water should hit the floss first. I get a big bag of it a the craft store for a few bucks anc change it out every few days.

I'm in the UK so no BRS products for me I'm afraid.

Is it okay if I have RowaCarbon in the bottom compartment, PhosGuard phosphate in the middle compartment, Chemi Pure Blue in the top compartment and topped off with filter floss?

You don't need the Chemi Pure if running carbon and phosguard.

I see, which of them shall I ditch? Shall I then only use 2 of the media basket compartments or use 2 with the same product?

I would run separate carbon and phosphate remover. So, one compartment with floss, one with carbon, and one with phosphate remover.

During research I read that if using chemi pure you don 't need to use carbon and phosguard because the chemi pure has the same actions as the other two? CJJON, is that why you suggest not using the carbon and phosguard if the OP is going to use chemi pure?

Not trying to hijack but I think this could help many newbs from wasting time and money on products they don't need to use if one product will do many actions?

Well, I like to run my media separate whatever it may be. The all-in-one type media are a compromise. Carbon and GFO will exhaust at different rates, I may want to run more or less carbon at times, I may want to run more or less GFO, etc. Some media can be reused, mixing it with other media like carbon makes that impossible.

Certainly if you are running a combined media, there is no need to run additional media seperately.

Agian, a good carbon and GFO running separate is cheaper and more versatile than something like Chemi Pure Blue/Elite that has them combined.

I've decided not to go with this tank and set up as I've spoke to 3 or 4 different shops today as well as had a look at another forum and everyone's opinion was the same that a pair of clowns will be better suited to a larger tank and most said get something over 60 litres so I am now seriously considering the Fluval M-60. Thank you for all the help I have learned a lot. I may make a new thread about my new choice or when and if I actually get it. Peace.

Personally I'd go with a different test kit than the API. They are not known for their accuracy. I did a lot of research before I bought mine and it seems you get some that are perfectly fine and some that aren't even close. I ended up with the Red Sea pro kit for Ca, Alk, and Mg. I am going to Phosphates, Hanna low range. My API ammonia test worked fine but there are others that didn't. Nitrates, Salifert.

I don't really care for the Alk test in the Red Sea kit, it's fairly tricky to tell exactly what it is IMO. I am going to be trying out a DIY Alk test using diluted HCL.

If you like the fluVal look just by the tank alone, and stand, it will be cheaper and they can get you just the tank don't let them lie to you and make you buy the package at which most of the stuff is so so, I bought the m90, and all the stuff was mediocre in most reviews so lucky my lfs said he'd take back all I did not want and refund me which still kinda worked in his favor. That's where the term research before you buy is key, seems like your on the way though, good luck:)

I'm in the uk and am yet to come across anyone who sells these tanks split up. I aim to make use of the mediocre stock equipment and as time goes by will upgrade when need be. It's the great £400 price point of this all in one package that let's me enter the hobby in this manner. I may buy a better heater and pump straight away as well as a power head.

Ha !here in us the kit no longer came with a heater, if budgeting and wanting to start fairly soon is your goal there's nothing wrong with using the light and skimmer and circ pump to start just wanted to let you know I myself did not plan on starting right away with this tank and upon research I would have used what came then replaced anyways sooner on so it saved me some money for what I really would have wanted to buy for the tank,

It's a bummer they won't sell the tank alone either,

If you are thinking about the Fluval M60, you can price-shop an IM Fusion Nano 20, if only to have another product / price point for comparison sake against the Fluval and if needed for negotiation with your vendor. Charterhouse, the vendor linked to earlier has the tank only for 224.95 UKP.

Charterhouse also has a sale on the Fluvial M90 kit for 499.95 UKP, so it is only about 20 UKP more than the M60 you are considering if you have the space for the larger tank...
